  1. I am a 15 year old trying to get into really good shape.
however, I am VERY confused about what to eat. I have a
very actice lifestyle -weights -50 minute run -20 minutes
    in the pool

currently I take a protien suppliment and try to eat 5-6
small meals througout the day. in those meals I eat LOTS of
fruits and vegatables. I may eat up to 2 apples a day, 2-3
bannanas, many pounds of carrots. I also eat wheat bread
during the day. with all of this talk of lowering the carbs
I am thinking I should do the same, but then I remember I
don't want to start eating away the the muscle I have
created during the long aerobic running. I weigh 145-150
    pounds (5'9'😉.

also, I am confused about HOW MUCH I should eat. I
understand that I should be taking in a certain amount of
carbs, but then I hear things like you need to eat a lot to
    keep a fast metabolism.

I can't go on a special diet or buy special foods because I
have no money, refrigerator room, car to go shopping, and my
mom will only by proccessed food but she does buy fruit and
wheat bread I eat. anyone anyone have any insight? I am very
    confused about what to eat.

Your weight sounds ok to me for an adult. Keep at the
exercise as that is the real ticket to successful weight
control. Be sure to eat your dark green vegetable and your
tomatoes. The current national cancer instutite recommend is
NINE serving of fruits and vegetables. It used to be five.
Raw nuts contain good healthy fats almonds, filberts,
pumpkin seeds, and pecans are excellent.

Avoid deep fried foods, white flour, simple sugars, and
hydrogenated oils. Remember about 1 in 150 have very
serious problem with gluten a protein found in wheat and a
number of other grains. Don't eat pyramid eat as it has too
    much grain.

Protein wise I'll suggest fish plus everything else you
might think of :-) Beef steak, pork roast, chicken. I'd
avoid breakfast links as they contain huge amount calories
and lard. Eggs are good. Avoid charred meats as they contain
cancer causing chemicals ----- polycyclic aromatic amines
    and hydrocarbons.

Will she let you cook and prepare your own food. At least
get her to avoid the hydrogenated fats, and simple sugars.
Refuse dessert. Warn her. Eat a good lunch which may mean
packing it yourself. Avoid hydrogenated cheap Mayo in your
sandwichs. Sardine cheese sandwichs aren't too bad if one is
active and young.. Almonds are easy to pack. Avoid the colas
and soda pop this will do much to inprove nutrient density
in your diet. Avoid McDonalds, Jack in the Box, Burger King,
Kentucky Fried Chicken as their food is [censored].

Food supplement wise, I'll suggest at the very least a 1000
IUs of vitamin D year around plus sun. Even Consumer Report
Magazine is now suggests this dose of this vitamin
supplementwise. And they hate supplements! or have done so
through the years. This may help you to have stronger bones,
and through your lifespan help prevent certain cancers such
as prostate cancer and in old age help prevent muscle loss
called sacropenia. And if you eat dark greens each day, you
will further increase your bone strength and density because
of the phylloquinone (vitamin K-1). Plus dark green foods
are rich sources of lutein and other carotenoids.

I am not a physician nor am I a dietician........

For Chrisssakes... you're 15,,, you can probably eat 3000
calories a day and not worry too much! Look for a book
called Fad Free Nutrition, and search online for a resource
that will tell you how many calories to eat for a person
your size and age. It is simple thermodynamics: It costs
more energy for a fat guy to walk a mile than a thin guy.
Thus, depending on how much you weigh, you get to eat more
or less. Age makes a difference and so does muscle to fat
ratio, but it's not a big difference. Bottom line u will not
lose any weight if you're eating more than you burn. On the
contrary if you diet too much you can hurt yourself and make
it tough on your metabolism, damage your heart and
malnourish yourself. If you are male, your weight sounds
fine, you might want to bulk up but I would guess you look
about average. Keep doing what youre doing. If you're
female, you might want to lose a few pounds. Running a small
deficit of 200-300 calories/day is all you need to lose
weight. More than that is just being silly, you're 15. For
older peoples if they get more calorie restrictive than -200-
300 calories, metabolism will slow down and they wind up
    losing wieght slower.

Things that are good in your diet:

Eating plenty of fruits and vegetables: natural fiber will
move through your system and keep your metabolism happy.
it's good for you. not to mention all of the vitamins you're
getting. Don't forget the dark green ones. That guy didn't
tell you no lies. Tell your mother to by fresh vegetables.
They take the same amount of work to cook either way. Learn
to cook yourself. If you're a guy,,, chicks will dig you if
you know how to cook. If you're a girl... other chicks will
get your guy if they can cook him a decent meal.

Exercise: I think you've got a pretty good plan. A variety
of different exercises is a good thing. However; Make
absolutely certain that you give your body time to rest. If
you lift one day, run the next. You will not build muscle
until you allow the stress that you put on that muscle time
to heal. If you overwork your body, you will get run down
    and sick. Don't do it.

    Things I'm ambivilant about:

Protein suppliment: If you're not getting enough protein in
the form of different kinds of meats, fish, poultry,
legumes, etc...then i would say go ahead and take it. If you
are, you're probably just peeing away your money.

Eating 5-6 meals a day: You should do what feels good for
you. Eating when you feel hungry is a happy thing, but I
don't think there is a shread of evidence one way about
how much you eat at a sitting(within reason of course)
makes a difference. My point is, there is no need to go
    overboard here.

    Things I think are stupid:

Low carb diets for 15 year olds. Don't freakin worry about
the low carb diet etc. It's all a bunch of garbage cooked up
by a bunch of old fat farts who couldn't LOSE weight. You
haven't evolved a metabolism that is burning 1200 calories a
day on fat free frankenfood. Don't do it, it is not your
problem. With that said, live by the words of Ben Franklin
and you'll be fine. Everything in moderation.

    Things I would suggest:

Drink WATER not sodas, not tea, not lemonade. Drink 8
glasses... If you do, you probably won't have zits like
all your friends and have to smear pimple goop all over
    your forehead.

    Chugs,
