Sad news - depends how you look at it - Paul's computer has died :-)

    I thought he had two.

I did, but I retired the older one a while back.

First thing I did was to plug it in again, and it worked briefly. But the
second time I switched it on it failed to boot because of an "unrecoverable
FAT error". I could have made the effort to get it working again, but I just
couldn't be bothered. I didn't want to go back to the middle ages with a 300
processor running Win98. I decided to look to the future instead and just
wait until I bought a new one.

In the meantime I used my Pocket PC to get a bit of work done, mainly
writing text for my website. It does have the capability to connect to the
net, but I don't have the necessary hardware (my external dial up modem
    conked out last year).

Obviously he couldn't tell you himself.

I don't know why not. Hasn't he ever herd of cyber cafes?

I've heard of them, but never been to one. I gather there is, or was, one in
Swansea, but I've never been there. I presume they charge money? Any idea
how much? I didn't have access to any of my passwords though, so I wouldn't
have been able to connect to the sites I really needed to connect to. I
guess I've learned a new lesson there, make a hard copy of all my user names
    and passwords!

Anyway, it made a nice change to be internet-less for a few weeks. It
reminded me of an earlier, simpler time...

Besides, it gave me the chance to get some other things done than I never
seem to get around to. It also made me realise just how much I rely on the
internet these days, and I don't just mean for aimless surfing and posting
to newsgroups. I'm talking about things like internet banking and other
online accounts, and just generally using it to get information of various
sorts, like phone numbers and opening times. I don't know how I ever managed
    without it.

What I find so surprising about all this is the news that Paul only
    had one serviceable computer.

No, as I said, I did have another, but it conked out after one day. I've got
loads of bits and pieces of computers that I've collected over the years, so
I could cobble something together in a real emergency, but I just couldn't
be bothered and it was nice to have a break anyway.

I think we can rest assured he has more than one servicable camera
    though :-)

I don't think he has cameras in reserve now,

    Oh yes I have!

I've still got the 300D, although I really should flog that while it still
has some value. I've also got four useable film cameras, all manual with
mechanical shutters, so there's no likelihood of those conking out anytime
soon. Two medium format, one panoramic and the OM1n.

I've even got a few rolls of slide film in reserve, and I was actually
contemplating using them if I'd filled my 8GB of flash cards before getting
a new computer, but that was not to be.

Or the library, Internet Surfing is free, in Derbyshire libraries at
    least!

Really? I must remember that for next time.

Use a password keeper program that encrypts them but can be easily
accessed by a single username / password combination that you can
remember. You can copy the program and data file to a USB pen drive and
take it with you wherever you go. Here are two I have used.

Thanks, I'll give those a try.

Nah, not fit enough for that! ;-)

I have been cycling regularly though, training to get fit for walking! But I
really need to stock up on quarter pounders to sustain this exercise habit.
A few more driving trips to the supermarket for burgers methinks... :-)

I always assumed ALL public libraries now have free internet access, well
all my local big ones do, and even in Haverfordwest.
