computer sensors for fat forks

  1. Does anyone have advice on what computers will fit the farm equipment forks on the Giro? I have an
    old Cateye that I wanted to use because it has cadence. But neither sensor strap will fit around the
    fat Giro forks. The sensors were designed to be used on chain stays.

    Any advice on computers (especially with cadence) or ways to salvage my existing computer would be
    appreciated. I had hoped to use my old computer to save some $$$. This bike has already had too many
    additional $$$ surprises. Zip tying the speed sensor to the fork does not give me the adjustability
    necessary to position it close enough to the wheel. I can make the cadence sensor work because it
    does not fasten to the fork. Thanks, Don

    Do you mean a flat aero fork? Cateye sells an optional mount:
    shop.airbomb.compage.cfm It attaches to the fork with a double
    sided tape, and there's a hole for a zip tie for additional security. I use it on my Bacchetta Aero.

    If you mean a fat round tube, I had no trouble mounting a Cateye Enduro on my mountain bike which
    has a fat suspension fork. Maybe the Euduro comes with an extra long band, but if so you should be
    able to get one separately from Cateye.

    Is the fork tapered? Maybe you can just mount it very close to the tip of the fork?

    Don, How about mounting the computer on the back wheel? Just a sujestion... Alec

    I've just fitted a Cateye Astrale 8 to my MTB - the speed sensor is designed to attach to the stout
    suspension fork blade with a couple of zip ties. (Be warned, though, that the new Astrale's speed
    sensor wire is unlikely to be long enough for most recumbents, coz they design it to go on the
    /front/ wheel of an upright, the cheapskates.)

    The Cateye sensors can be easily detached from the existing mount, though, so the mount from a "fat
    fork" kit can be combined with the rest of the exsiting mounting.

  5. Thanks for all the suggestions. Desparation to ride and start my new bike with a computer helped me
    find a soulution. My old Cateye Micro is a 1988 version. I wanted to use it because I have already
    spent enough on my new bike and because it has cadence and therefore was designed for a rear wheel.
    That gave me the length I needed to mount on the front of a Giro. The sensor is a one piece strap
    with bullet sensor combined. Not like the Cateye Cordless II I have where the sensor can be removed
    from the strap and a different strap used. I sure wish I could use the cordless on my Giro. Hate all
    these wires.

    Anyway, I poked out the nut imbedded in the strap. That let me pass a zip tie through the two
    ends of the strap. Then I sip tied it to the fork with a strip of innertube underneath to
    provide necessary gripping power. Where would we be without Swiss army knives, duct tape, and
    old inner tubes?--cave men I tell you, simply Neanderthal. Oops, better add zip ties and hose
    clamps to our tool box.

    The computer also has a plastic magnet housing that bridges two spokes. It is weaker and requires
    more precise positioning of the sensor than the newer button style magnest but it is gentle on my
    black spoked Velocity Thracians.

    So, the speed sensor is up and working. I will mount the cadence sensor on a black plastic gizmo
    designed to hold a reflector on the front derailleur tube. The gizmo has a swing arm so it should
    work great.
