I recommend tyres with a kevlar belt for puncture proofing. My current commuters are mntn bike based and one has IRC Duro's (looks just like the Panaracer V ATB) and the other has Continental Sportcontacts. Punctures that were sometimes a daily occurence on regular tyres have disappeared completely with kevlar tyres. The IRC's feel harder, the Continentals a bit more squishy in comparison, but both are perfect for my needs. Pump them to the max recommended pressure for easy rolling, or a bit less for comfort.
