Commuting - what's your distance?

Depends on time and weather. About 2.5 miles if I'm running late or have
wimped out, between 10 and 12 miles when I have more time.

We've had this thread before, but what the heck.. my commute is 11 miles
each way, which usually takes me around 40 minutes.

12 miles is certainly a doable commute and others here do similar distances
or more, but it would seem like a big jump from 2.75 miles. I have to admit
it took me a long time - years rather than months - to actually feel it was
just a normal thing rather than an achievement each time I got there and
back. That's not to say that you couldn't immediately start doing it,
however - it just depends on your fitness and how comfortable you feel with
the distance. You can always do things like ride it every other day, or in
one day and out the next if you have somewhere safe to keep the bike
overnight, etc.

Just over two miles. I did start looking for a job further away to give
myself a bit more of a workout before I realised how stupid that was!

On the other hand a longer commute would justify more gubbins for the bike
(or a better bike..)

I do 7.5 miles each way. Takes me about 40 mins compared to 20 mins driving.
I drive to work the first day with work shoes, trousers and a supply of
shirts as it's too much of a pain to carry them on the bike. The last day I
drive in again to take the stuff home. I aim to cycle in at least 3 of the 4
days in between.

That's only on day shift though. Haven't built up the enthusiasm to kit up
for cycling at midnight or 1am after a late shift

5 miles, each way, takes half an hour. Would be less but for all the
traffic lights, give ways, etc, of riding through the city centre. By
car I can do the same journey in about 12 minutes, but that's going
round the inner ring road rather than straight through the middle.

I try and ride it every day, unless it's chucking it down in the
morning. Getting soaked on the way home I can live with, on the way in
would be rather different. I read of places where showers, etc, are
provided at work and wonder what world they are in - every employer I've
ever worked for has had costs stripped back to the bare minimum
necessary to stay in business and not get prosecuted.

almost exactly 2 miles each way, which takes about 5-8 minutes depending on
wind direction and traffic lights, but I double that as I come home for
lunch most days.

12 miles is a reasonable distance to commute if conditions are decent,
though you might prefer a road bike for doing it daily. I used to do
Bath-Bristol in 35 minutes on the quickest (no hills) route, though I
was younger and fitter back then ....
Add some combination of serious hills, off-road surfaces, bad traffic,
foul weather etc and it starts to seem a longer journey.

i do 21 miles, although i must admit i only do the return leg
they dont have showers at work and i hate to spend the day smelling like a
pig, so the wife drops me off when shes going to work

About 7.1 miles which takes me 35 minutes going home and about 37
minutes going to work. I work a nightshift so I normally setoff at 8pm
to arrive at 8.35pm and then chill out, clean up and start work at
9pm. Set off home at 7am. Only 4 shifts per week (38 hours) and I take
the car to work monday night and leave the car at work (with spare
clothes and other work related stuff in) and don't drive it home again
until Friday morning. So 6 cycling journeys a week. Only just started
doing this for the last couple of weeks but so far so good but icey
roads and severe rain will stop my cycle commuting.

When I started bike commuting it was 8 miles e/w. It nearly killed me
to start off with but that was because I was unfit. I soon got used to
it.

Then I moved to another site; same route +2 miles e/w. Those extra 2
miles were always miserable.

My usual commute is now 4 and a bit e/w if I head for the A roads. If
I stick to rurality and coast it's about 6 or 7. Once a week or so I
have be on another site, 10 miles and a big hill away. Used to enjoy
the variety but have done it by taxi/bus for a while now.

Up to 5 miles is good for suit wearing utility cycling. 10 miles is
probably perfect for cycling and then getting changed.

20 miles round trip, north London to central London and back every day. All
urban riding as you can imagine. Takes about an hour and a half total return
journey time. I'm a lazy sod.

7km. Takes me under 10 mins to get there and about 30 to get home.
I used to do an 11 mile commute when I lived in Winchester. Used to
really enjoy it after I got used to the distance.

Not a commute (I'm retired), but yesterday I needed to go by train to
Swindon in a suit. I decided to cycle to the station (2 miles) and lock
the bike there for the day. It all worked out really well. 2 miles I
can cycle without raising a sweat - taking care not to race as I usually
do. If I ever have to go back to work (if Gordo steals any more of my
pension), I'll be looking either for a cycling job, or to be able to
cycle commute.

Your best bet is to aim to get *really* sweaty and stink the office out so
the directors decide that showers for cyclists are the way to go!

I've got a ba*tard great hill instead. Well,it's only that on the way

As for headwinds, we have the famous mobile headwind round here.
Introduced by early Scots settlers in order to build moral fibre and
