One thing I can't do without when commuting is music, cuz thats the
only time I seem to get to listen to new tracks and stuff, so I've just
picked up the cheapest of the Ipods, the 512Mb Shuffle. It seems more
robust than other mp3 players (nearly everything I take commuting ends
up broken, sooner or later: dynamos, lights, brakes, gears...), as it
has no LED display or fancy menus. It just plays in sequence or at
random, so I've loaded it up with my current TOTPs, set it to random
and stick it in the top-box (where the WRX amp is fitted), and I'm
off...
The things that people [censored] the shuffle off for are ideal
characteristics for a bike sound system: simple, no complicated
controls, no moving parts, the relative small capacity (120 songs) is
OK cuz you dock it to load the current playlist (which also recharges
it). It has no hold button, but I have it stuck in a bit of pipe
insulation which works a treat. The lack of EQ is OK as well cuz the
(waterproof) WRX handlebar speakers are hardly the hi-est of fi. gets a
good level anyway, almost loud enough to hear over the traffic.
It certainly seems more solid than the other mp3 players I've had,
maybe it'll survice the winter.

out it does - just press and hold the 'skip track' button.I love my Shuffle for all the reasons you give. Small, simple, and
genuinely excellent sound quality (most websites I've read say the
quality is actually better than the 'real' iPods). And, heck, who needs
a screen when you're on a bike?--

I got a pair of Etymotic ER6i off an american seller on Ebay for around
£60 delivered and they are worth every penny. Apart from cutting out
the wind noise, the sound is quite astonishing. Also perfect for
travelling as they cut out the sound of the train/tube and you can have
them as loud as you want without annoying the people around you. -

use and well over 500G when powered down. It does appear that the
technology has moved on a little from the days of "don't jump when the

I got one of the sumajin (http://www.sumajin.com) cases and a matching
cable wrapper thingymajigs which is perfect for cycling. When worn
around the neck, you have access to all of the controls (allowing me to
skip ELO tracks that I must delete from iTunes) and adjust the volume
ete. and the earphone cable is kept well out of the way.I was also given a shuffle sports case by Apple which, in my opinion,
is inferior to the sumajin product and about thrice the price.
