Commuter Bike Choice

With a similar mix of terrain ( I am a rowing coach and ride to the club,
then on the toepath) I have just ordered a Claud Butler Urban 300 - not sure
where you'd get it in the States, but carandcycle.netcarandcycle.netOpen ↗ give a good
price in the UK. I will be fitting some mudguards to keep myself clean!

I think Dawes are still made in the UK, if that makes any difference to you (someone will correct me
if I'm wrong). They make quite competent and well regarded tourers, but to my possibly prejudiced
mind they're not in Cannondale class.

If you're considering the Cannondale you might think about whether the extra money for the headshock
would be worth it to you - it's suspension that really does make a difference. I have a Cannondale
MTB; they are superbly made and finished bikes, but because you are paying a lot for that beautiful
chassis you tend to get less good componentry than you would on another make at a similar price
point. However, it's much easier over time to upgrade componentry than to upgrade a frame!

The other thing is that if you buy any last year's model Cannondale, or a this year model Cannondale
tourer, you get a lifetime - your lifetime - guarantee on the frame, whereas if you get a this
year's Road Warrior or MTB you only get three years. So it might be worth thinking about getting a
T800 or T2000 and swapping the drop bars for straight ones (if you're sure you want straight ones).

No opinion on the Kona - it's a brand which hasn't made any impact on my consciousness at all,
either positively or negatively.

OT, but what about the Marin Mill Valley?

It's like [censored] off a shovel on the road, and seems to be standing up to my fat [censored] (100+Kg) on smooth-
ish paths ok. Plenty of room for mudguards, and mounts for panniers front & rear.

Might be worth considering...

Frames, at least in the case of the lugged & brazed ones, are made somewhere in Eastern Europe, but
uncertain where. Could well be the Czech builders Fort, who turn out some nice stuff (and, maybe
more than coincidentally, offer a lugged 531 touring frame)?

Hi Sam

I'm from Denmark. I have a Kona Dr. an I love it. I have change the fork, it's now an Easton EC90 carbon. The rest of the bike is the original, an the bike is now perfect for me.

Im not so good in english, so I hope you understand me.

In Denmark we also have the Centurion Extreme, an with a higher stem and maybe a riser you also get a good bike.
