  1. Background Info: For some stupid idiotic reason, on Monday after a ride I decided to change out my seat with another one I had in the garage because it looked more comfy, and was lighter than my current. I put it all together and fit myself in the garage. The next day, I ride about 5 miles down the road and have indescribable knee pains. It was everywhere, and I coasted the 5 miles back. Obviously, I had fit myself wrong. I put my old seat back on, and did another 15 miles that day on the old settings (probably stupid), and felt good. Took a rest day the next day.

Today: Did a moderate 35 mile ride in the wind, about halfway my knee started having a minor pain. Pain continued randomly for the rest of the ride. I didn't really think anything of it because it was so minor. The pain is the common behind the knee, usually saddle too high, pain. I got home, it wasn't too bad, but has gotten significantly worse since no longer moving.

The question: I'm planning on taking the next 3 days off even though I needed to ride this weekend for my training for an upcoming ride. But, do I go get my bike refitted? I rechecked everything, and the saddle is exactly where it used to be. I did 1000 miles earlier this season no problem. Did the pain come from the ride with the screwed up saddle and took a couple days to show up, or did it come from my current setup and I need to have it looked at professionally again? Should I take more than 3 days off, even if I hate the time off?

I had bad knee pains about a year ago and I went through a lot of trouble to avoid getting any pain this season, yet I still go and screw myself up again. I'm very frustrated, so any help would be greatly appreciated,

  2. FWIW Pain in back of the knee usually means the saddle is to high adjusting down in small increments should make that go away. Adjusting down to far will cause pain in the front of the knee. If there is no comfortable inbetween seat height that works I would look into nutritional causes of knee pain maybe low vitamin c which helps make cartilage or low HA a water holding molecule that keeps tendons hydrated.

  3. I don't have much to offer except to commiserate - and suggest that you got a bike fit session (definitely worth the money to avoid knee problems).

I had IT band problems all last season, pretty much resolved that with stretching, and rolling out adhesions. I had a great "off-season", a good solid base of early season road miles, and then on long group ride, bam, more knee problems - except now pain everywhere.

Ugh, the season is just starting, NOT a good time for knee pain (if there actually is a good time). Take some time off, like you said. And then go for the fit. I know how frustrating it is for you, and how you probably want to get your fit adjusted, like, NOW, but it is probably better to wait until your pain subsides. Otherwise, your pedaling and general biomechanics will refect your favoring your bad knee and compensating for your injury more than they will reflect your actual pedaling/riding style.

  4. Sorry to hear about this... I did the same thing about 20yrs ago, friend crashed a bike one of the only parts that was salvageable was the saddle. I always wanted to try that saddle so I put it on my training bike and went to the Wed. nite training race. Near the finish started to feel more pressure around the knees than normal and in the final sprint they really hurt... I think it was only the small change that triggered the pain but it stuck around for years after that so I probably was looking at some kind of over-use syndrome... Rode the mountain bike for some time after that and learned to manage the swelling and pain over time (ibuprofen, stretching, massage, rest...)

    again sorry for your troubles,

  5. Thought I'd give an update. I slightly lowered the seat about 1/4" to begin with. Been slowly getting back into cycling, gave the knee a full week to recover and have since ridden 3 times about 10 miles with no knee pain. However, I did witness some extremely intense quad cramps the past 2 rides, so bad I could barely make it back home. So I raised the seat in between where it used to be, and the position I lowered it to, and hopefully that should cause my seat too high and my seat too low position. Weird how a 1/4" can affect so much!

Ah yes, this is exactly why I have only now, after 3 years of riding off and on, decided to risk changing anything on my bike in terms of fit. I still have some random knee pains, but I think I managed to get my feet clipped in properly.

If I had more money, I'd like to get re-fit for my bike into a more aggressive position.

I'm always afraid of changing something and totally messing up my legs because the major reason I picked up cycling was the minimal risk of injury (unless you wreck!).

Hope your changes alleviate the problem!
