I had an illness for 6 weeks which knocked my FT down about 15-20W and meant I haven't really trained much recently... shame... but I'm better now and it's time to get rolling. I have tours in October, November and December, as well as single day road races from 80-298km and the occasional criterium. Because of the extended (albeit involuntary) break, I am treating right now as the start of my season and the main goals right now are increasing FT, endurance and ability to recover day to day.
So, the basic plan is:
Saturday: 2.5 Hour Group L2/L3/L4 ride followed by flat 2X20@L4 ~200TSS
Sunday: Endurance L2 4-5 Hours ~225TSS
If racing, collect power data for race and aim for 400-450 weekend TSS. If the race is on Sunday, I will estimate the race TSS to plan my training.
Monday: Off
Tuesday: 4 Hours Endurance L2 ~190TSS
Wednesday: 3.5 Hour Hill Ride L2/L3 with 2X20 L4 on Hills ~220TSS
Thursday: 2.5 Hours Including 1 Hour Fast Group Ride L2/L3/L4/L5 ~140TSS
Friday: Off
Yes, I have a fair bit of training time (good point).
I plan to freshen up for races in October, but not so much that it should affect my CTL or even ATL particularly - the races are long and hard so it's more to avoid totally blowing myself out by combining race days ~300+TSS with hard training.
If the load is killing me (which I don't think it will, but maybe...) I can back off a bit in volume, cutting L2 time from Tuesday, Wednesday or Sunday whilst maintaining the intensity from the L3 and L4 work.
I may try to work in some crits on the weekend as an alternative to the Saturday session, but will follow them with some L2/L3 riding to keep TSS up if I do.
I'm thinking 8 weeks of this sort of training should get me moving alright. Questions, comments, criticism? While we're at it, anyone want to share a deeply thought out approach to meso/macro-cycles?
Any input appreciated (unless it's from WarrenG).
