A group of six bents, including me on my GTT in the lead were cruising the Napa Valley Sunday 11-16. A small group of DF's going the opposite direction was encountered. One of the guys in the group shouted at us "Greetings, we're from earth!"
I nominate that as the best, most amusing comment I've heard while riding bents....

Good one 🙂
My fovorite so far was when I did the Golden Apple Century with my bodysocked GRR, and one rider said: "Dude! That looks like the Oscar Meyers Weiner bikes!"

Hi Mike
Kind of related to those ribbings from the DF's...
Our bent group up here in NE has been known to throw out an occasional "Take us to your leader!" when seeing any open mouthed "What the hell are those?" looks on pedestrians faces.
Another one of my favorites when passing any upright packs (who first toss out any good natured (?) ribbing) is "Your weapons are useless against us!!"
I'm a FOG with a beard. I was wearing my long sleeve red cycling shirt and rode past the local skateboard park and one of the kids taking a ciggy break on the bleachers said, "santa?" "Michael Plog" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:II9ub.173983$9E1.896837@attbi_s52...

While riding on a trail, passed a family going the other way. Adult said to kid, "See, I told you it wasn't a midget!"
My fovorite so far was when I did the Golden Apple Century with my bodysocked GRR, and one rider said: "Dude! That looks like the Oscar Meyers Weiner bikes!"
Ouch! Did I actually say "fovorite"?
Anyway, just remember another couple of good ones.
On my Haluzak. I believe it was the first few days after I first bought it. I stopped at a local park where they were setting up some big event, and asked this old man what were they setting up for. The old man stopped what he was doing, looked at me for a few seconds, then said slowly with a strong southern accent: "Son? Your bike's upside down".
Again on my bodysocked GRR. I recently thorn my old bodysock, and while I waited for the delivery of a new one, I borrowed one from a friend. The sock I borrowed has several ads for his bike messenger business (Chick-Chack). The two of us went riding together, like two big rolling billboards (see allgoodnamesrtaken.com2 GRRs.jpgOpen ↗). When we passed this family walking by, the little girl asked: "What's that!", to which the dad responded "Those are chick-chacks"!
why didn't your reply with something like " if you want to "fly" try out machines some time"?

I rolled my P38 (with a small fairing) into a LBS and I was bundled up for cold weather riding.. There was this little boy there, probably 4-5 years old, and very sincerely he asked "are you an astronaut'?
Uh, I got news for them. To most( non-cycling) people those multicolored Lycra clad bikers look like complete dorks.

Hi Pat,
I'm a multicolored Lycra clad cyclist who rides a recumbent. Guess that just makes me a dork on a recumbent. I can live with that: I'm a very comfortable and complete dork.
About the "we're from earth comment" just thought o f a "come back". To the "we're from earth" he should merely have spread his fingers in the Spock greeting and replied: "Ride long and prosper".

Alas, most of us in this group are 'recovering roadies, and lycra abounded on us too... Use the stuff you bought, before buying new is my motto, though one of the guys takes out the padding and wears the shorts inside out as a statement.

Or perhaps, "Resistance is futile. You will be assimilated"
We are BORG. Bicyclists on Recumbents Grinning!
The best "time-delayed back-handed" insult from an upright cyclist was the guy who said "There's a future recumbent rider up ahead" to my friend and me as we met him on the local rail trail. Thinking he was referring to my friend's 10-year-old son several hundred feet ahead of us, I smiled and waved in response.
We came around a curve and met another upright cyclist. 350 lbs plus. I wanted to turn around and chase down the first guy and tell him we was right, that other guy might well be more comfortable on a recumbent,-- but so might he.

Hey Joe, I meant no offense. I personally have no problem with racing cyclist attire on racers, pro or poser, because I understand the functionality of it. And I like the brightly colored jerseys. Especially the ones that have artistic designs. (Compared to the pro racing team outfits. Why would anybody wear a billboard for the Post Office, or some flooring company in Italy?) I have made the personal decision to sacrifice aerodynamic efficiency and not wear tight fitting clothing that reveal parts of my anatomy that are better left to nobody's imagination. Not to mention saving lots of money. Cycling-specific clothing are way overpriced. On a side note, have any of my fellow benters noticed how the wind flow on a high bottom bracket makes your leg hairs stick straight out?. After a long ride my leg hairs are all sticking out at 90 degree angles. My DF lycra clad riding buddies get a kick out of it.

Maybe it's the 4-year olds who make for the best encounters, anybody agree?

Oh yeah. I was parking my bike in front of the local post office when a mom with her 4 or 5 yr old daughter came out. The little girl's eyes got big and she said "Look, Mommy, a pirate!" ( I was wearing a red & white Headsweats bandanna). Mommy got all embarrassed and tried to ignore her, but the kid kept trying to get her to look--"Mommy really, it's a pirate!"

I gave up the loose stuff when the bee flew up my shorts. Lycra is just more practical for me. I agree about not wanting to look like a billboard, though. Until somebody wants to pay me to advertise for them, it ain't gonna happen! You can get lycra stuff for runners which doesn't cost an arm and a leg. I hate paying a premium for a pad, only to take the pad out. Or worse, pay a double premium for a mfg to leave the pad out. And Coolmax underwear goes a long way to prevent 'overexposure;' while expensive, it lasts nearly forever.

A little personal maintenance can alleviate this. There's lots of wiggle room between being shaved and being totally unkempt. Or is that just the swimmer in me, suggesting something that is culturally repulsive?
