  1. What a title huh? Just had a colonoscopy and my doc wants me to take 25
gm of Metamucil a day for the rest of my life to avoid any possible
complications due to diaverticuli. All is fine now, but the potential is
there he says. I think I eat alot of fiber from veggies, nuts, berries etc,
but I guess it's not consistently enough every day. Anyone have any other
natural foods that are LC that I could incorporate?

Ground flax. Outside of veggies and nuts, I'm not sure what else qualifies.
LC tortillas and bread make good sources, too.

The carbohydrate content is mostly undigestible dietary fiber and just

  5. Cocoa powder has a lot of fiber.

I think you need to do some serious research. You might find a better plan
    for handling your pre-diverticuli.

Hey jk, how difficult was the colonoscopy to go through? I'm having my
first one done December 20th (Merry Christmas!) and am more than a bit
apprehensive. I hate having any procedure where I'm given a general
    anesthetic.

I had the first one 5 years ago in hospital because of insurance
constraints, and they removed suspicious pollups, so I needed a followup.
This one was done in the docs office with an anesthesiologist there. It is
such a snap, you don't know that anything happened. I asked for the lightest
possible meds. I actually woke up during the exam and was watching it on the
monitor until I fell back asleep. When it's over there is ZERO pain or
discomfort, as if nothing happened at all.

I had one a few years back right before I found out I had diverticulosis.
The worst part about the procedure is drinking this [censored] they give you - in
my case it was called "Golitely" or something like that. Yeah, the idea is
you keep going until you "run" litely, and I don't mean back and forth,
either. They give you like a gallon of this [censored] and you have to drink a
glass every 10 minutes. The taste is awful and you're so busy going that
you can't keep up with the drinking schedule (but you really need to down it
    all).

As for going under...well, I'm on the table thinking "this [censored] ain't gonna
work on me". Yeah. Then it got hard to concentrate. I remember waking up
once seeing the doctor and nurse standing behind me. Next time I woke up it
was over. That part was easy.

  12. Stir it in 8-12 oz water and drink it down. Be sure to get the powder. You
have to stir a bit since it tends to initially clump. (Metamucil solves that
with high carbohydrate additives which I want to avoid.) I buy mine at
Vitacost.com. It's very reasonably priced at that website.

I haven't had a colonoscopy, but my husband and sister both have. They
didn't have a "general anesthetic" per se, but they were pretty out of
it (think twilight sleep vs. total anesthesia. It's more of a heavy
sedation than anesthetic. I think your doctor will work with you, if
you let her/him know about your apprehensions. They an drug you as
little or as much as you want, really. If you prefer to be totally
conscious with just enough drug to keep you comfortable, then you need
to tell them that. And, during the procedure, if you want more
sedation than you're getting, you need to speak up. Your the boss. The
doctor works for you. Make your wishes be known.

All in all, from everyone I've spoken to, it's the prep that's worse
than the actual procedure. I'm sure it'll go fine for you.

IMHO, The prep from hell -- Diet is pretty limited starting the
    day
before, mostly clear liquids. Then the have you drink this stuff
    I
can not think of the name of right now. The end result is a very
intense relationship with the local commode.

Hey jk, how difficult was the colonoscopy to go through?

I'm having my first on Friday (whee!) and the prep isn't as bad as it used to
be, supposedly. Yes, I'm going to spend the night on the commode, but I only
have to drink 8 ounces of ginger ale (yuck, and sugar) with 1 1/2 ounces of the
medication, not the gallon or so it used to be. Also, I remember a friend
phasing out various foods. I can't take aspirin or ibuprofen this week
(although I can take Tylenol), but I don't have to limit my diet until
Thursday. I can handle a 24-hour liquid diet. I have about a 1/2 gallon of
chicken broth set aside for the occasion.

I'm asking for maximum anesthesia. A friend is taking off the day from work in
order to drive me home, and I want to make it worth her while.

Good news! Now you only have to drink two doses of Fleets Phospho soda.
(It's awful but you can drink it all down quickly). One the night before,
and one the morning of. Not nearly as bad as the old gallon of salt water! I
only paid a few visits to the bathroom after each dose.
Call me nuts but I wanted a really light sedation to watch it on the
monitor, and not have the aftereffects of a heavy dose.

Exactly so. Important safety tip - even if you normally buy whatever is
the cheapest toilet paper on sale, for this time only it's so worth it to
buy a 4 pack of the good stuff.

IME the procedure itself wasn't bad at all. Versed makes me happy and I
mostly remember wanting to ask what the little things that look like
strawberry seeds were on the monitor, but no one seemed to be paying
    attention.

The prep is by far the worst part.

Larry had one. He got Versed. It is a sedative with amnesiac affects.
One can follow directions and be kind of awake, but they don't
remember what they said, what was asked, or any discompfort if they
were sedated enough. Now the prep is, well ......... "Go Lightly"
enema in a jug LOL. Make sure you have lots of magazines in the
bathroom!!! It tastes better cold too.

Personally, I was too worried about how it would feel to want to watch on a
