  1. When running in cold weather, what is the best way to prevent your
lungs from starting to burn? and does that mean when your lungs start
    doing that?

  2. Leafing through rec.running, I read runner's message of 11 Nov 2004:

Your body is pretty good at heating the air that you breathe. You can't
freeze your lungs. If you are new to running and new to running in the
cold, you may feel a burning sensation in your lungs if it is very cold.
Through better conditioning this feeling should subside. If it is too
uncomfortable for you, you can cover your mouth with a scarf, ski mask or
    one of these items:

If you start running January 1 and all you've done all year is eat
potato chips and drink beer, you will definitely feel a burning
sensation as well as a general tightening in your shoulders and chest.

If you've been running all through the summer and autumn, the first few
cold days you might feel a little burning, but by and large you will be
invigorated and once you are warmed up, you're lungs might burn because
you will be feeling so damn good you'll be racing against yourself, but
that sensation is probably from acidified blood.

Seriously, on very cold days (20F and below), wear a neoprene mask and
run really slowly for the first mile. You'll want to lose the mask when
you pick up the pace. Mostly I wear it because it takes my skin a while
to be comfortable with the temps.

  5. Why is it that your average runner is afraid of cold weather running and is
full of old wive's tales, but XC skiers don't give it a second thought?

Because the average runner runs in average temperatures.

yet the X C skiers get mad at the runners on the snow trail.

it means your air is too cold.. warm up or die......

  10. Peoplpe can readily go to sub-zero F without problems over the weeks as the
weather changes. A sudden weather change or chest cold is different story.

    Hi rick++.

Are you aware that for years now, you reply to people
in newsgroups without quoting the original text?

Many people delete the group's contents on their news
readers from time to time (or set older posts to delete
automatically after a set period of time) when the number
of "read" posts becomes cumbersome. meaning that
sometimes the original text isn't readily available without
messing around at google groups or something.

Since about four years ago, I have mentioned this to
you a few times, as I ocasionally would like to reply
to something you said, but I am not sure what you were
getting at due to your misjointed approach.

I just thought I'd give it one last shot... so yeah, you'll
find a lot more people have a clue what you are talking
about if you include the text you are responding to.

    cheers,

And most newsreaders will easily quote the text for you. On mine, I just
highlight what I want to include before I click "reply." Then I trim out
    excess material, if any.
