  1. I know it's nothing to you Melbournites, Tasites and
ACTites but it was a cold weekend for riding in Perth
this weekend. We had a record low of -0.9 in the City.

For me, besides being cold, the irony is that I
recently bought a thermometer to put on my handlebars
that only goes down to zero. I figured that I'd
never see negative temperatures with the mild winters
    we have here in Perth.

Took me ages to warm up afterwards.

Ahhhhh, you poor thing. See, your plea for sympathy worked on me!

Ah, so that's why I thought it was a little nippy when I got up the
other morning. My brother in law was going on as if he was about to
drop dead from hypothermia. I just stuck a t-shirt on under my shirt
and felt fine. The locals are just soft! ;-)

Oh I'm happy to put my hand up to being soft when
it comes to the cold. I don't like it. This is despite
being of British heritage and growing up in the Adelaide
    hills.

It is interesting though that I felt colder on Sunday
morning than Saturday morning despite Sunday being
4 degrees warmer. I remember noticing this effect
when I was living in the UK. I felt colder at
plus one or two compared with minus one or two.
Something to do with dry vs humid air or something
    I think.

fog? Wet air pulls significantly more heat from your body than dry air
    does.

You Perthites are softys, we get subzero all the time. We had -6 in
Collie, a new record for us. A friend rang up a plumber to get frozen
pipework repaired and got the reply that the plumber had 40 calls that
morning already. Last week I did a 20km mountain bike ride to work in -2
    degrees at 6 am.

Had a wet fog at minus 4 in Canberra last week.
That was pretty cold riding and the wet stuff turned to ice on glasses which is no fun.

Went out with one of the Freo Bikeforce groups on Sat am and was starting to
warm up by the time we went along Riverside Drive in CBD. BUT the temp
dropped considerably after descending from Kings Park into Nedlands and was
freezer-like around Perry Lakes. If you dive you'll know about
thermoclines, layers of water that vary noticably from the layer above and
below...that's what it felt like on the bike. I reckon it may have been
about -5 at Perry Lakes judging by the thick frost on the grass. But even
DEF's cut-price and cut-temp thermometer would have been useless there!!!
    ;op

Regardless of whatever temp it was, there still seemed to be most of the
cycling hordes out on Sat am. Also on Sun am...despite the Perth-wide thick
brown blanket of burn-off smoke that persisted until Sunday lunchtime.

So, while we may complain about the weather, we Perthites aren't complete
namby-pambies, as we still get out and put in the kms!!

Well, counting physical limnology as one of my areas of knowledge,
I know about thermoclines and that is indeed what you experience
when you dip down into a local valley. I'm not sure that the
atmospheric people call them thermoclines. It can be especially cold
around wet lands (eg Perry Lakes). The coldest spot on my ride was
around the river at Applecross. Still in the shadow of a creeping
dawn and very still. Plenty of frost on the ground too. Gave me an
excuse to try out my new winter booties that I picked up cheap(ish)
at TBE. They worked a treat.

A reliable source informed me we got to minus 7 in Tuggeranong when I
was heading to work last week. I had a ice-cream head-ache at Woden and
pain in my fingers and toes. By the time I'd got to around Yarralumla
though, I could no longer feel my extremities so I was fine! It was the
ice all over Commonwealth Bridge path that got me worried me!@

You're not wrong! I just got back from a trip to Perth, and for a brisso it was bloody cold. I took a bike over and went out on saturday morning with the barrack street jetty bunch. I had arm & leg warmers but no vest or undershirt. I thought it was colder than normal, then I later heard it was -0.5.

Nice ride though, friendly bunch, and a great way to see the city. The view from Majestic Pt (I think) was spectacular with the sunrise over the city.

Overall I really enjoyed Perth, great to see so many people riding to/from work on the paths, and drivers seemed to be bike-aware.

What's up with how long it takes for the traffic lights to change though? Jeez no wonder people run reds.

I noticed that when I first moved over there. Freaky. Do they still
turn off the streetlights at 1am and have fatcat tell the kids to go to
    bed at 7:30? 🙂

    That -really- freaked me out!

Yep, Perth's pretty good for riding. I'd like some hills
options and I'd like it to be a bit less windy (although being
a sailboarder, it can blow in the afternoon). Traffic is "OK"
but you still get plenty of idiots to stop you relaxing, especially
near intersections. Bunches are usually well respected.
Saturday was unusually still. There's often a significant
tail wind along Mounts Bay road and the bunches can scream along
    there (50kph not unusual).

On my RtR (Round the River) rides, I manage to avoid most
traffic lights but they can take ages. Indeed, if I'm
riding the plastic bike (ie CF), the sensors will completely
    ignore me!

Hmm, this is making me want to get out there again, especially
as I'll be off the bike next month in the UK.

LOL...nothing's changed. Except for the fact that the Fatcat promo is even

Unless you have different physics in Canberra, the wet fog was not at minus

Which reminds me of Shane Digney that used to ride down that same hill
on his motorbike. Shane was one of Australia top underwater hockey
players and to stop his full face motorbike helmet from fogging up from
his breath he used to ride with a diving snokel.
