Technically not an abandon as he never started the race. His spot on the team was filled so it's as if he never showed up.

Nothing like being the 1st reserve and getting a last minute call up.
Err "You doing anything this afternoon, 3 weeks ?"

His replacement, Peter FARAZIJN, didn't quite finish last, and at least he made the start. It'll be fun to follow this guy. Hope he lasts. It's got to be the chance of a lifetime for him. At 35, does he have any previous Tour experience?

Yes, in fact he has had a top-20 finish. I've heard conflicting stories, the one that seems most Belgian is that he was drinking with his buddies when he got the call and sobered up during the ride to the race...
On saturday he was attending a car rallye (Ieper) with his son. They had to call him umpteen times before he was reached. Then he had to paddle home on the bike, gather his stuff etc. He got police escort to make it into Liege. He must have arrived less than an hour before his ride.

Casper went early so that Farazijn could get a few extra minutes to warm up. He finished 2nd from last but, considering the circumstances, that wasn't bad.

Did you see how [censored] Bettini was about him being allowed to start? (in the Eurosport intro clips.) He was saying next year he won't bother turning up for all the medicals etc - just get a team mate to pull out at the last minute...
