If you can get to alt.coffee, there is a similar thread and there are
lots of very enlightened coffee lovers over there. I do not think any
of them would recommend a Mr. Coffee. Coffee makers really matter.

I have a Hamilton Beach that works just fine. Not fancy, just turn it on
    and it brews coffee 🙂

  6. My favorite thing about my coffeept is the TIMER! Just tell it to, and
it makes your coffee at 6 AM so you wake up to the smell of a
fresh-brewed pot. nice way to get out of bed.

    It's a proctor-silex from target. i find that it's more important to
consider the quality of the bean that the coffeemaker itself. I used to
use a french press but i just wasn't happy with it. i get whole beans
    and grind them fresh.

people tell me i have great coffee. i like it too much to drinnk crappy
    coffee.

'Zactly... ADC (or any brewing method) is 95% dependant on the coffee
used, how freshly roasted, and how it's ground, and only 5% on the
machine/method. The next most important criteria (regardless of all
the aforementioned details, is how soon after brewing coffee is
consumed... coffee is best when consumed within one (1) minute of
brewing... ten (10) minutes after brewing coffee has already lost 50%
of it's flavor, because 95% of coffee flavor is actually aroma... if
your smeller doesn't work well then any darkly colored bitter liquid
will suffice. No human over age 30 can decern good coffee anyway, by
age 30 the human olfactory organ has lost better than 50% of it's
ability to perceive any odors acurately, simply a biological fact. So
next time you see old geezers as coffee tasters you will know that it's
100% charade/showmanship. So don't believ anyone over the age of 30 who
lectures you about the particular benefits of how to brew coffee...
their comments are as accurate as a totally blind person describing the
color nuances of fall foilage. And I'm being very, very generous with
    the age 30 cut off.

I bought a Krups espresso maker about 3 years ago and have used it at least
3x/day since. But have replaced the carafe 3x, and replaced the lid 6x. The
durned lids lose a little stickout dingus that holds it tight. I won't buy
another with that design. I'm on my last lid (yeah I wish) and carafe and when
they die, I buy a different espressoer.

I drink way too much coffee to move up to espresso. I believe the
proper brewing temp is 205F and a good bean is one you like the taste
of. So get a brewer that brews at 205F and find a bean and a grind you
like (harder than it sounds). I like dark european roasted beans the
best. I like the taste they have. And I like a real fine grind. But
that's just me...find your own preferences.

Tying the brewer method plus machine and the bean roast you like can
take a long time. But inroads can be made fairly cheaply getting in the
ballpark, so to speak, on the type of roast.

    Dear Monsur Fromage du Pollet,
I picked this information up in Canada (assuming you are Canadian?):
Expresso coffee is made with 'expresso coffee beans'.
I have bought cans of coffee saying "Expresso Coffee."

If one has a expresso coffee machine, doesn't one always use 'expresso
coffee' made with a specific type of coffee bean? And what beans are
    expressly made for expresso.

Aren't expresso coffee beans processed a certain way so as to make it less
    caffeine; and perhaps less bitter?

And are these beans used for expresso always ground to a certain fine grind,
    called 'expresso grind.'

  13. we have tried just about every "common" brands available, and find
    absolutely NO DIFFERENCE.
imo,its about the coffee bean, temp, and storage of beans.

    FYI:
Gen. Richard B. Myers, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told
reporters that the senior U.S. commander in Afghanistan believed the
protests in that country had resulted from developments there, NOT from
a story in Newsweek. "He thought it was not at all tied to the article
    in the magazine," Myers said.

[censored], coffee makers only matter if you're SELLING coffee makers.

What matters more than the coffee maker, even more than the coffee per
se, is the water... after all, brewed coffee is better than 99.9%
    water.
And if you drink your coffee with anything added, ie. milkk, crem,
sugar, flavorings, then the coffee or how it is brewed matters not a
whit... mixing anything with coffee is no different from using top
shelf booze to make whisky sours. If yoose drink lattes you ain't
drinking brewed coffee at all, may as well be instant.

Agreed. With great coffee, the French Press is the best. The OP was
asking about drip though. French Press takes a few extra minutes and
IMHO is worth it, but we only do FP on the weekends. Our Cuisinart
drip works the rest of the week and makes great coffee.

From my knowledge, it is about the brew temperature and the "sitting
temperature" as well. Any of those can be detrimental to a fine cup
of coffee, even if you start with the best freshly roasted yummy
coffee beans. Of course a grinder matters a whole lot too, but no one
has asked about the grinder <g> so we do not need to step into that🙂.

    aloha, Thunder

I always wanted a French Press, but kitchen space always at a premium. I
like the espresso maker because it makes just a teeny cup or two as I'm
the only one here who does the caffeine thing. I do have a couple
different roasts tho - I like the breakfast blends for a soft full taste
and the darker roasts when I'm in the mood for sharper taste. I saw on TV
where the darker roasts naturally have a little less caffeine. And I put
groceries in my coffee and I can still taste a good blend from instant in
    a New York minute.

    I concur! :-)

But if you have your heart set on a drip machine, I like Melitta or
    braun.

One of the secrets to good coffee (other than the obvious point of not
buying cheap, canned "brand name" coffee) is to use DI water and
_unbleached_ coffee filters! Once I got used to the raw paper coffee
filters, I could taste the chemical taste in the coffee from the
    bleached filters.

The other real advantage to using distilled/deionized water in the
coffee maker is that the machine "lives" longer and you never have to
run vinegar thru it to clean it out. No hard water deposits. ;-)

FWIW: While "manning" a booth at the Specialty Coffee of America
Association (it is SCAA but can never remember where the 2 "A"s
go)--anyway, I was told many times, that the gold filter imparts the
least taste. I was told, white filters impart a white paper taste to
fine coffee and brown/natural impart a brown bag flavor, so only use
    those "gold" kind.
