  9. Not being a grumpy sod... but isn't this whole "Bumming Cody Williams to
get Renegade sponsorship" getting a bit too much?

It's a sponsorship, and it's been overhyped in this topic way too much
for what it is. I know many others agree with me, but don't want to say
    it.

Pretty much every single Pro rider in the world at any sport, who isn't
an immature sponsor/attention craving madman will tell you time and
    time again:

\"DON'T GO TO THE SPONSOR, LET THE SPONSOR COME TO YOU\".
Begging sponsors for sponsorship is plain sad, it really makes you look
like a tripe, especially if you're not at a _high_ level. Let the
sponsor gain interest in you first, before even thinking of asking them
for sponsorship, that way a healthier and better relationship can come
    as a result.

That being said, I think to represent Renegade, and essentially Koxx in
the USA, you must be of a high standard. To sponsor average riders is
not a good thing at all. I think possibly, what should be, is the
minimum sponsorship level for this should be: High intermediates/in the
elite class at Unicon trials/street comps. That sort of level if you
get me. I'm not that sort of level yet, so I will wait until i get to a
high enough level before I even consider a chance of sponsorship (but
at the same time, wait for the sponsor to want me, not me to beg the
    sponsor).

-Some North American riders I think that should be worthy of such a
sponsorship, off the top of my head (correct me with they are already
    bound to a major sponsorship)-:

Joey Cohn, Keaton Miller, Ben Plotkin-Swing. there must be other riders
at their sort of high level?

I'm not trying to criticise people or be 'nasty' in anyway, I just want
to clarify this is what to be expected. Just think, how much better
will you feel if a sponsor comes up to you first, instead of you having
to beg your way in? 🙄

    Heaps better 😉

  12. I applaud Cody if he got the sponsorship the 'clean route' as I
described earlier, that really is a great feat, and I wish him good
    luck.

As for others, I think one good course of action would be to make a
good video of yourself, with good editing, music that goes with it (no
death metal! :p ), and someone who recruits people for sponsorship
(like Cody here) will become interested if good enough. Remember, half
of the sponsorship is about being a good ambassador for the sport and
the company sponsoring you. If you are genuinely a hard working decent
rider, and a mature one too, then that is a big plus when sponsors are
    looking for people.

Riding ability is only half of it, the attitude is the other half.
    Boasting is almost sponsorship-suicide!

  13. Thanks Sponge. Renegade doesnt really know that much of the unicycling
world so they asked for my help in fiding riders. I made that thread
hoping that some of the more experienced riders would show interest,
and those that did I was going to ask directly...I have asked a few
riders personally if they would like to join the team, riders such
as...Sabin Arditty, Keaton Miller( The ping thread was for a reason
;-D), Dan Heaton(Tom requested him), Justin Abbot, and Brian
Cameron....Not all of these riders will be able ot make it, Dan and
Keaton have yet to writtin back....

flaunting his stuff with the newbies.

(lol i am just jelous because i know that i would never land a
sponsorship, one i don't get enough time to practice and two there is
no one who will sponsor me in this area, or any other area's for that

  16. Sponge,

I agree with you almost 100% on that statement and I respect you for
saying it and the way you have articulated it.
I agree, almost every single sponsored rider, the main sponsors within
unicycling anyway, have been chosen e.g. Shaun J, Ryan Atkins, Kevin
McMullin, Dan Heaton etc. and yes, I would say it is far more gracious
and far more rewarding if you are approached by, rather approaching a
    sponsor.
On the other hand, I do not blame some riders for seeking sponsorship
rather than waiting for it. Some riders do not get as much exposure as
others and ,as has been already mentioned, some riders aren't in the
right place at the right time and therefore are not sponsored. If
riders wish to represent a certain brand/team, think they are good
enough to do so and want to work hard on doing so, then sponsorship is
for them. Some riders have dreams which only a sponsor can make reality
but sponsorship is certainly not for anyone and everyone.
So those who truely want to be sponsored, for bigger reasons than
getting free stuff, keep at it, work hard, but those who take
sponsorship lightly should just forget it, sponsors won't be
    interested.

    Words of wisdom. (thumbs up)

I didn't quite dive that deep into the matter, but Jason's explained
things really well, and I can't fault his statement.

Just thinking back... Joe Hodges was a nobody until he appeared at BUC
earlier this year, and he suddenly made himself known. When I first met
him, around a year ago now, before I'd got into unicycling, he was
already a very good rider ripping it up on the big stuff at the
biketrials group rides I took him to. It's just an example of what
Jason said about the lack of exposure of some riders, and sometimes its
necessary to let yourself be known. But not in a begging manner.

I think the way that Kelly Hickman asked Darren for a Bedford
sponsorship was very respectable (its on youtube). He made a decent
video, with an on-camera introduction etc.. and gave the impression he
was someone serious about it, and knew what he was doing. That's an
exception to the 'don't ask sponsors' rule.

You'd be shocked at how many biketrials riders in the UK (OKish average
level) ask shops for sponsorships... emails like this:

    Quoted message said:

hi der, my names jack and i woz wondrin if i can be sponsored by ur

I originally thought this thread was weird (and the first half is), but
it's getting to some healthy debate here...

My feelings on sponsorship: First off, I didn't see Yoggi post a
thread on a public forum, such as unicyclist.com, saying that he's
looking for people to sponsor, and then end up having some sponsorships
at the end of the thread.... Nor do you see Kris Holm creating a thread
discussing who he wants to sponsor and add to his team. You see Kris
making a thread congratulating them on their achievements. There is no
recruiting taking place here. These conversations should take place in
your email, or in person, on the phone, etc... NOT in a thread.

Cody, you should feel no need to post things such as who you're
considering or who hasn't gotten back to you yet, or anything of the
sort! Talk to them, and don't gloat about it.
