Probably on Beeb 4 at some stage but not in the immediate future (two
weeks) which I have listings for. Watch out for the last program in
the series. They gave the impression that they had done it all when
they got back to Dover but this Friday's prog is a grand summing up
and crystal ball gazing session.

I hope Paul Gretton watched it. It will have answered a lot of his questions
about walking along the Northumberland coast.

Great series. Somehow I actually managed to be in some of the spots covered
at the times they were broadcast. I was on Lleyn, for example, when they
were
talking about the Leatherbacks. I've been following UK marine life for a few
years
now and I had no idea there were Leatherbacks in Cardigan Bay. They missed
out some obvious stuff though. It may have been the price of covering some
of
the more obscure bits but overall it has been excellent viewing methinks.

I was a bit dissapointed that the last one - from the Wash to Dover,
which emphasised the changing coastilne - didn't mention Dunwich. I was
there a couple of years back and IIRC in the past it was supposed to be
the biggest port on the East coast South on Newcastle, with several
churches, a monastery, leper colony and hospital. All that's left is a
row of about a dozen houses - the rest is in the sea! Also, whilst
Wellborne was mentioned, no mention was made that there was a saying
that 'whoever controlled Wellborne, controlled England', because of the
deep water anchorage there. Another strange place for somewhere that was
so important in the past - just a scattering of a few houses.

I thought some of the subjects they did concentrate on were either
mundane (can't even recall what) or had been covered in other programs
in the recent past (Orford Ness, Ravenscar, the great flood).

The only bit of the coast I know at all well is Dovercourt Bay and he
skipped over that with just an inaccurate reference to the sunken barges
protecting the shore of Horsey Island (not the only mistake but I forget
the other one I noticed). I would have thought that there are at least 3
subjects in the area that would have been worth at least a brief
mention. The Redoubt (a Martello Tower on steroids and by far the better
preserved of the only 2 in the country), not one but 2 pairs of leading
lighthouses and off-shore the Rough Tower aka the self styled
independent principality of sealand.

There are no firm plans at the moment but the series is very likely to
be repeated in the next twelve months.
