I don't think anyone else has mentioned this, but have you looked at your saddle height? The new pedals + shoes will probably need the saddle to be at a different height than your old shoes + pedals and a wrong saddle height can cause knee pain.

I did this initially and checked it again yesterday. There's no real difference to factor in (the width of a pencil mark). However I also did 25 miles with the new cleat angle and there seems to be some improvement. During the ride I felt some small niggles in the knee (maybe due to prior rides?) but afterwards the ache had gone for the first time since fitting the pedals. Today I can feel a very mild ache but it's definitely an improvement. Thanks to all for the advice. I'll see how it goes over the next couple of days - I'm tempted now to leave the new pedals on for my tour (leave next Tuesday). Decisions decisions.... tony R.
