  1. Hello folks
i was wondering whether any of you could direct me to some interesting and long hills in Sydney to train on. I have been riding from Riverwood to Engadine (weekdays 35km) or Waterfall (weekends 60km) recently via Como Bridge and along east parade. I am also riding to Kurnell (approx 60km) via Como, crossing the the princess highway and port hacking road and along the captain cook drive

any good climbs that anyone would like to point out, that are nice and long, on which i could work those legs? (info on gradient would be nice if available)

    thanks all

I'm not from the south but many years ago I found the climb out of royal national park pretty unpleasant

I love my circuit which has plenty of climbs.... Eastwood to Bobbin Head via Browns Waterhole/KissingPt Rd

  3. When you get to waterfall, turn left and go into the Royal National Park. When you eventually get to the bottom, there will be T junction, turn right and ride to stanwell tops, then carry thru to the Princess Highway, turn right and head back to waterfall.

Next week try the same loop in the opposite direction.

  4. I prefer to turn left at the t junction the previous poster described. there are three climbs on the way back to Sutherland. The first is around about 3.5 km long about a 4% gradient. The second at Flat rock creek around 1km long at 4% and the last at Audley around 2km long at around 4-6%.

Try going in to the park at Sutherland and going up to waterfall. This is also difficult.

If you go through to Stanwell Tops, you can go down to Stanwell park and climb back out. The hill is around 3km at 4-5%.

    Hope I helped.

Whats the traffic like on the Audley bit? When are you riding?

Its quite good as long as you stay away on Sunday afternoons and on public holidays. At these times there are heaps of cars that are not familiar with the road down there having picnics and possibly a little alcohol.

Sounds interesting. Are there any climbs longer than this - ie 7km+ around this area. Or do you need to head Blue Mountains way to find this sort of stuff.

  8. Probably your best bet is to continue south from stanwell park and head down to wollongong area. There are a number of good long climbs down there.

    Mt Kirra 6km 4-6%
    Maquarie pass 10km 4-5%
    Jamberoo pass 5km 5-10%
    Saddleback Mt 5km 10%
    Bulli pass 3km 6-10%
    Mt ousely 5km 4%

    to name a few

Might be a good Idea to drive to waterfall and head out from there.

The other thing is that most of the climbs mentioned apart from Bulli and Mt ousely are very safe in terms of traffic. Good quiet roads.

    Have fun.

  9. The Stanmore riders do a 75k hill ride thru the north side on the 1st Saturday of the month, ie tomorrow. I was looking forward to doing this but I can't make it this Saturday. If your interested, they will be leaving Stanmore cycles at 5:30am (ouch). They don't have a web page, you could call Stanmore cycles for more info.

One of the groups that leaves centennial park at 6:30 Sunday has a group that does the Audley ride that MPCRUSHER has described.

We'll be doing a similar route as Stanmore on the Sunday at the more reasonable hour of 7am. My stoker doesn't finish work until late Friday, early Saturday so we don't get to do the Stanmore ride.
There are a few hills on the way but nothing very long.

    Cheers

F*** I hate that. I had nearly finished typing the whole route when I hit the wrong button and deleted the whole F***ing lot.
I'll cut and paste from word this time.........
Canterbury Rd then L into Crystal, Balmain Rd, R Lilyfield Rd, over the bridge across Victoria Rd and over Anzac and Pyrmont Bridges. King St, L Clarence St, over SHB via the cycleway on the western side.
R Albert St, Middlemass St, R at the end under the railway the L onto Hwy, R Miller St., R Falcon St, Military Rd, L Spit Rd and across Spit Bridge. First left, R at hairpin follow to Sydney Rd. L at round-about onto French’s Forest Rd, Wakehurst Parkway, R Pittwater Rd through Narrabeen. L Dee Why Parade, R at end onto Griffith.
    Have an espresso!
Keep going along Griffin to Carrington, Evans, L into Albert, L into Cavill, Queenscliff, R Greycliff, R Nth Steyne, R Victoria, R Esplanade, Commonwealth Pde, Lauderdale, White, R Wangenella, L Sydney Rd and over Spit Bridge.
First L into Parrawi, L Spit Rd, R Military Rd, L Spofforth, R Rangers, L Murdoch, R Bannerman, L Wycombe, R Kurraba, L Clark, Broughton, R at the top at Milsons point rlwy station under the bridge and you are back on the Sydney Harbour Bridge cycleway.
I you want a few more kms, take a left at the end of Wakehurst Parkway and ride up Powder works Rd then R onto Monavale Rd to Monavale and then R onto Pittwater Rd.

We will just be going to Narrabeen on the Sunday though.
    Cheers

    Second St.
it's about 85km to Narrabeen and back from our place and takes us about 3.5 hrs depending on how we are doing on the hills.

    Cheers

  15. I notice there is mention of riding some hills south of Sydney [Wollongong] & to the west [Blue Mountains] well here is one to the north which as the guide says "Some good hills on this one. Only for experienced riders." Sunday 21 May

You can even add another bump onto the profile by continuing north over the brooklyn bridge up to Mt White and turning around....but it's going to really hurt.

Galstone Gorge! use to burn around that on my motorbike, way back in my youth. I'd better remember that I'm on 700c*23 with no suspension.
