A bike should sound like woooosh or swish (unless it is on knobblies
where thrum is acceptable) but one that whirs from the freewheel just
sounds like it hasn't been maintained [1].

It's a polite way of asking pedestrians to get out of the way.

The freewheel mechanism is big and chunky (and reliable) compared to
ShimaNO, hence the noise... I think. Some grease in there will quieten
it but too much may clog it up and cause injury when it stops working.

Only recently I mentioned that I like a loud freewheel but mine has hushed
up a bit after a service. I must have used more grease than usual.
Thought I'd gone deaf at first.

Speaking as someone who rides Campag on my good road bike, Suntour on
another, SRAM on one mountain bike and Shimano on the other, I can't
say I ever notice either the click or the lack of it. Yes, Campag
freehubs do have a characteristic sound, but you only get that when
you're free wheeling and, let's face it, what proportion of the time is
that?

in a group, on a sunday club run - quite big! I like the noise btw - I
use shimano because I always have and I have the tools - but one day I
will move to campy.....

I think it is the equivalent of designer clothing that has a logo so
prominent that it shouts the purchaser's aspirations from the rooftops.
Personally if I was interested to know what groupset someone else is
riding I would ask them.

I always go for a little grease to quieten it down. But as Pete says, only
a little.

My bike has the distinctive Campag buzz. I might be sending out mixed
messages though; my groupset is mostly Shimano Ultegra, but my rear hub is
Campag Centaur. I quite like the buzz, but when I swap wheels for my
Ultegra-hubbed ones, I like the silence too.

in a race as well (although surely you would be pedalling). I just put
it down to superior Jap engineering, much like their (dons asbestos
jacket ) Ergo shifters. What were pre-Shimano ones like? ISTR all my
old bikes made a fairly clunky freewheel noise.
