Use a towel + lube. For hard to reach areas, a toothbrush can be used. Special cleaning liquids for the chain should be available at your LBS.
It would probably be easier to clean by taking off the chain etc and cleaning each individually...but that takes work. Or use those plastic-like chain cleaners. I've never used them, I think there have been mixed results on that. -

This topic has come up a lot before (try a forum search for "chain cleaning" or some such.)
(for what it's worth, for quick chain clean jobs I use degreaser-in-a-can on the chain that I then wash off with water spray; for a proper clean job I use a chain cleaner thingy for the chain and a toothbrush for the cassette and chainrings.)

I use a chain cleaner from Park Tools...makes a nasty yucky job a 5 min fix...well, 10 mins. It's still messy but it's fast and messy.
