His fault, IMO, is that he's confusing muesli eaters, Gruniad readers and lycra wearers. As one who wears lycra, occasionally eats muesli and never reads the Gruniad I'd like to say that I think pavement cyclists are a pain. Whether they pose more danger to me than a genuine disabled carriage or a motor car, which in some cases the driver while not actually disabled may as well be, is irrelevent by virtue of the fact they are seperate issues. Clarkson is worthy of that oft used rebuttal in uk.tosspot: "tu quoque". -- Regards, Pete

In sheer numbers, and ignoring the inflammatory remarks, he's probably right that cyclists knock down and injure more pedestrians than invalid carriages do .. Maybe we need testing, or something like an MOT, for cyclists and cycles ?

Such tests & standards don't seem to have stopped motorists killing thousands of people each year and injuring even more.

Obviously the lycra-lout rant at the end was ignorant and wrong - but he has a point about the tests for these invalid carriages though. It does seem unnecessary to regulate these vehicles so heavy handedly when they are necessary for the disabled - and they don't seem to cause a problem (you hardly ever see them, let alone get knocked down by them!).

Speaking as a Guardian-reading, muesli-eating lycra-wearing and (given my advancing years) progressively more wizened cyclist, I can only say that if I have managed to [censored] Clarkson off to that extent, I must undoubtedly be doing something very right indeed.
What paper was it? I would like to write in and answer his question: less than one per year (compared with about seventy per year killed on the pavement by motorists, and the same again on pedestrian crossings).
In sheer numbers, and ignoring the inflammatory remarks, he's probably right that cyclists knock down and injure more pedestrians than invalid carriages do
Indeed. While the number hit by invalid carriages is negligible, the number hit by cyclists is all the way up to insignificant.

I wouldn't object to it if it reduced the number of people who ride like complete tossers and cause people to hate cyclists in general. Of course, there'd be no need for it if there were decent numbers of traffic police about.

Righto. Go and find figures for casualties in countries without driving tests, or even just countries with driving tests less stringent than ours.

He normally writes for the Sun IIRC. But I don't know for sure whether that's where this article was published (although the formatting looks right for it)

Less stringent than ours? What, they count the heads and you pass if you have at least one?
:-)
I believe in some parts of the US the driving test consists of driving around the local church once. I can't find a reference for it though.
Our driving test is one of the most stringent in the world. Not stringent enough, of course.
I think the main problem is a lack of retesting. We don't have that good a system for making sure that drivers keep the standard of their driving to a satisfactory level.

I didn't say they did, and I weren't aware we were discussing motorists in this thread.

To be honest our system for making sure that they have a satisfactory stanmdard to start with is pretty poor, and I completely agree on the issue of retests.

I was giving a sense of scale & proportion. Quite frankly I think cycle training is a good idea, but it should *not* be used as some sort of excuse to legitimise Clarkson's bashing of cyclists, which is exactly what the woolly- haired [censored] does in his usual anti-cyclist rantings. He's an utter [censored], who talks bollocks, which is probably the only place he has any.
But isn't that the same as cyclists in this newsgroup taking the [censored] out of all 4x4 drivers just 'cos some see them as status symbols ?
Or cyclists taking the [censored] out of any particular section of road users who they see as all being 'against' cyclists ?
Mind you, it's just the same in the other road users groups I lurk and post to .. they mostly seem to [censored] each other off, instead of posting about any positive benefits of what they do ..

Exactly my point ... he talks bollocks ...
sorry, missed a line or two ...
Exactly my point ... he talks bollocks ...
So why does everyone seem to get so uptight about such an insignificant and unworthy person ? No-one, including most drivers I know, don't listen to anything he says really, they just laugh at his prejudices, they don't laugh with him, they laugh at him.
