Mario Cipollini, Paolo Bettini, Luca Paolini, Danilo Di Luca, Mirko Celestino, Filippo Pozzato, and
    Daniele Nardello."

What has he done in the past 12 months to merit this?

Pretty much nothing? But then again he is more rational than Elefantina, and
Mr. Aero ears is still massively popular. Bill C

He _did_ win 2 stages of the Giro. However, a bigger question is why Petacchi isn't on the list
    if Cipo is?

It may be due to the fact that Cipo would peak for the olympics anyway, since he will ride the
individual pursuit there. OTOH it may be that Petacchi schedule for 2004 contrasts with his olympic
partecipation, since he wants to ride again at least two of the big three (Giro and Tour, probably),
but he's intentioned to peak also for the springtime classics and give a shot at the WCup general
    classment.

Have you seen that Cipo truck in the latest Cycle Sport? What has he done to merit his mug on the
    side of that?

BTW, that is one cool truck!

I doubt that's the entire italian team.

His record over the last couple of years of setting aggressive yet still achievable goals and then
reaching those goals is unmatched. This wasn't that apparent this last season because his primary
    post-Giro goal was the beach.

But yeah, you have to wonder why Petacchi was not included.

Remember that olympics is just 5 riders per team in the RR. So I think a pre-selection of 8 is a
reasonable number. The names are another matter ... (di luca? come on)

Pre-selection is not the same as selection. You can expect Petacchi to KILL everyone in the Giro and
Tour this year and that's bound to set him up for the Olympic team. I was just reviewing the Tour
tapes and Petacchi looks remarkably like Cipo.

His primary post-Giro goal was the Tour, which he was again shut out of, despite many appeals for
the reigning world champ and his team to ride in the Tour. Left on the doorstep, he headed for the
beach to lick his wounds (or have them licked for him by those women in the Specialized ads!)

How so? Cipo wins only when he has a pefect leadout and is dropped off at the front with 150-200m to
the line. Pettachi rarely gets a leadout except from Cipo.

Remember in last years Giro everyone expected Cipo to take all his stage wins; all the commentary
was based around him. He eventually did it, but in the first week he was getting beat. Once they
think they have it made, they don't train as hard and start becoming arrogant.

I think he meant in physical appearance. They all look the same to Tom.

True, it's not like the WC, you don't get to have a huge team. Still anything could happen, injuries
or what not- with the vuelta rght around the same time, there could be a few changes if someone
decides they'd rather do the vuelta or gets injured or fried in that race.

When Cipo gets motivated he is one ball buster. He didn't win those spring classics by being a fudd.

The Olympic RR is 14 August. The Vuelta is 4-26 September. The world championship RR is 3 October.
