Yes. I saw this coming as soon as I saw the Vuelta insist that he comes with the team. The DV is in
reality fielding and 8 man team, although he may end up repeating last year's schedule since he
wants to be in decent shape for the World's RR. I think he could do well in the RR if he gets
serious about his preparation.

Yes, he has shown his face at a couple of the post tour crits. I don't recall him 'winning' any of
them. But he has done more than sun himself in Egypt, but not much.

Cipo may last until they hit Andorra, but that's a stretch. He seems to be able to handle the alps
and even the dolomites, but I think he really hates the pyrenees. However, he is likely to last
longer than Petacchi, who I predict will bail as soon as the road turns upward.

Petacchi will stay in long enough to win a stage at which time he'll be the first rider in over 40
years to win a stage in all three grand tours in the same year. Really, other than to accomplish
this feat, why is Pettacchi even at the Vuelta? He's had a great year. He's already raced two grand
tours. He isn't going to offer much support to Gonzalez. He just needs the stage win.

I second that; it's too hilly for Cipo. I was surprised to learn, however, that Cipo's contract was
extended when it was still not clear whether he was going to do the Giro. A dozen people's September
livelihoods depend on his participation and he was going to blow it off. If I was his team I would
extend his contract contingent with his participation and (attempt at) completion of the Vuelta.

Seems like he suffered from some altitude sickness or a fear of heights in France....

The Vuelta invite for this year was strictly based ion Mario wearing that "Special" jersey he won
last October. Next year the Tema will have to earn their right to start. So his contravt really
has no bearing on his racing in Spain and vice versa. Personally I'd love to see Lombardi race
for himself instead of being Mario's Beotch (though he's well compensated for that, and
deservadly so..) .
