choosing an insulin pump

you weren't put off by the poor service reported here today?
Check out Ron's thread, "First Bad Pump Experience". You
aren't just getting a pump, you are signing on for 24/7
customer service too. I've had excellent technical support
from MiniMed from 1996 to present. I've complained about a
couple of issues with 511 water tightness (I've got a 508)
and billing issues, but their tech support is superb. You
can call them at 3 AM and get a response and if necessary, a
replacement pump sent out within hours via FedX Overnight.

What specifically has you leaning towards the Cozmo?

When comparing pumps, the Cozmo seems small and has most of
the other bells and whistles. And yes, I did read the "pump
nightmare" thread but sometimes one person has a bad
experinence which does not represent the general consensus.
Although his experience did sound awful. I like the fact
that Medtronic has been around for 20 years. Do the supplies
for each pump have to come from that company? Or is there a
pump which uses sort of generic sets that are easily
available? Glynn

It was a tough decision, but I finally went with the Cozmo
specifically because I had a poor response from MiniMed
service at the end of my 507's life. That combined with the
billing and ordering issues floating around after the
Medtronic buy out pushed me over the edge. My, admittedly
limited, service out of Cozmo so far has been great. Only
time will tell which decision is the correct one. I don't'
think there is enough real information to make a rational
choice. Ultimately, I voted against the 500 lb. gorilla.

One of the things that annoyed me about MiniMed is that they
have gone to a proprietary syringe/infusion set connection,
away from the standard Luer lock, in their new pumps. Deltec
uses Luer locks. I get my syringes from Deltec and my
infusion sets from MiniMed, the original QuickSet. (The new
QuickSet, recently recalled for adhesive problems, uses
their new connection.) My insurance company has no problem
with that, but you should check with yours.

MiniMed has been around for a long time and was founded by a
guy with a great interest in helping diabetics. They were
bought out recently by a medical conglomerate and there is
some fear that the corporate culture is changing. Deltec has
been making ambulatory drug delivery pumps since the late
80s, although their entry into insulin pumps is fairly
recent. They were bought up by a medical conglomerate,
Smith, in the mid 90s.

have responded (albeit not in great numbers)--any comments
from users of Animas pumps?

Our years of experience would lead us to again purchase
MiniMed pump. Their service has always been great. We tried
others and they were never what we needed. Kilty

I have over 10 years using Medtronic pumps with no reason to
change. But the big thing is to try their infusion sets and
see how well they work for you; IE how difficult and painful
to insert/remove, and how well do they stick in everyday
living. I am extremely pleased with the QuickSets, and that
biases my pump choice

I have an Animas IR1000 and I love it. Easy to learn and
use, Luer lock connections, so I can use any infusion set
except Minimed's proprietaries (I use Pureline Comfort sets,
same as the Silhouettes).

I can't say anything about Animas' customer service. I order
my supplies through my pharmacy. Animas pumps are
distributed in Canada by Auto Control Medical, and they were
very helpful and informative when I was going through the
purchasing process.

BTW, if you go with the Animas, the newest model is the
IR1200, which will be available in Canada around the end of
the year. I get a free upgrade when it becomes available.

My only beef with Animas is they won't sell their EzManager
software outside of the US. Their reasoning is the rest of
the world uses a different system of bg measurement (so
what, I've been posting here for 10 years, conversion is no
problem) and they use the USDA nutrient database for
nutritional information. I do too. I don't even think Canada
has its own nutrition information available for public use.
Basically, I paid for an IR thingie on my pump I'll never be
able to use.

I had originally decided on a Minimed pump. During the very
long insurance preapproval process, information started to
surface about Minimed's crappy customer service, billing
practices, waterproof claims and the problems with the
QuickSet+. It was enough to make me change my mind when my
pump was finally approved. I got my pump two weeks after the
insurance approved it, and was pumping two weeks after that.

There's people who swim with their Animas pumps that post on
the IP mailing list and haven't had any problems. I don't
wet my pump at all, so I can't speak from personal
experience, but nobody's reported any problems.

Have you joined the Insulin pumpers mailing list? Digest or
browser options are the best, I use my browser and it's like
the newsgroups. They're pretty busy. There's chat every
night at 9pm EDT if you want some live input.

I used to have a disetronic, it's waterproof but had many
problems. I know medtronics has been guilty of shady
business practices, mainly charging people for things 5
years ago they claimed then were free.

If you're going to get one now, also find out how much of a
maintenance and monthly supply cost there is, but fro
mcustomers not the company. I had to change my infusion set
a lot, and several diabetics including me had to ditch the
new ones that came out years back since the new glue holding
it together gave us rashes.

I have started the ordering process with Minimed and all I
have left to be done is the letter of medical necessity from
my doctor. Thanks for the advice about the Quickset. I
ordered the 512 because I presently take about 34 U of
insulin in 24 hours and wanted the smallest pump I could
wear. Why do you prefer the Quickset?
