Edinburgh Bicycle does shorts that seem to be of a good quality. They
also do a single colour of jersey but no longer do the waterproof
jacket. Other useful things could be kids tracksters (cotswolds, many
running places).

I seem to remember seeing children's shorts in Decathlon (Giltbrook,
about a year or so ago).

Mrs Billington, Bromesgrove Olympique (sp)cycle Club, runs a company
specialising in childrens cycle clothing. Can't remember its name
though. Logo is a few interconnected chain links. Quite often has a
stand at York Rally (anyone got an old rally catalogue to hand?)

on the matter anyway, I find it hard to believe that things are not readily
available for children if we want to encourage them to use cycling as a form
of exercise or a form of transport wearing the right clothing is a part of
it , what do others think ?

What "things" do you mean? At an introductory level, there's nothing
(aside from wearing a sock on your right foot that can accomodate your
trousers ;-) that's cycle-specific; wearing comfortable clothes that are
suitable for the weather is all that's required. At an intermediate
level, when the child might be working up a bit of a sweat, then
suitable wicking layers might be introduced. Again, these aren't
cycle-specific. It's only when the cyclist (child or otherwise) is
doing, say, 20 miles or more at a time, that they might want to think
about things like padded shorts or *gasp* lycra shorts - and if they're
doing that sort of distance, I figure they're pretty well hooked ;-)

The problem is that for the clothing to be comfortable and fit for
purpose it has to be made of appropriate materials and of appropriate
quality. This makes it relatively expensive. The market is not large,
and thus outsourcing to cheaper manufacturing places is not always
viable. Becasue the market is not large there are not the number of
places stocking such kit.

Becasue it is expensive and kids grow rapidly, there is less incentive
to buy instead of 'make do'. I still use kit I bought as a student in
the '80s. My kids wont wear stuff they get now in three years time, let
alone fifteen.
