Other than maybe color, the real thing bears no resemblence to those yucky singles. I believe Kraft defines American cheese as a "cheese food product" lol, not exactly CHEESE

I haven't seen those in a long time, Nanc, and I've looked. Tillimook, a onetime quality cheese producer, has recently come out with AC shingles, but thay don't really do it, either.

Most of them aren't. Borden's, once an icon for wholesome milk, now has zero milk in it. They didn't even bother to put in a poor facsimile of cheese flavor. They're just plain ol' yellow vegetable oil-based polyvinyl crud, as are many house brands, like Albertson's, etc. They taste just like brie. 😉

Damned shame that people might think that is American cheese, those singles. Gimme a box of that Army cheese any day.
The deli counter at our local stupidmarket has real American cheese loaves; maybe Julia's does too... :-)
I'm sure it does. I just never thought to buy it. The supermarket has a good selection of cheeses. I usually get an all-purpose cheddar there. There are specialty markets for when I want the better blues or others.

The individually wrapped cheese comes in several drastically different grades. From veggie oil, whey, and polycryptonoids at the low end, to ones with just milk, salt, enzymes at the higher end. You gotta look at the ingredients and fine print, as well as the price.

Kraft has a couple of different items labeled as American "cheese". If you look at the small print, some of them say "cheese food" or "cheese product", but some just say "cheese." If it says "cheese food" it contains other ingredients beside cheese. If it just says "cheese" then it is just cheese.

Many years ago, someone gave us an American Cheese loaf from a "give away"... it was one of the ways the US gvt subsidized milk at the time). I was surprised at how good it was! It wasn't the usual velveeta (good or bad), it was milder and creamier than longhorn and it really appealed to my children - who were under 10 at the time.
