On the one hand, some adaptions for bent accessories I've run across speaks well of creative
ingenuity, but on the other hand, we have a lawn-chair/duct tape imagery among non-benters that I
don't find particularly as fetching as our mode of cycling deserves. Adding a trash can compounds
this problem of imagery, I think. I'll pass on this one, but thanks for sharing.

I picked up a used (looks new) backpack at a hiking outfitters for $0.50. I just undid the
straps, reattached them to the back of my seat and called it good. The pack has about 1200 cubic
inches of space.

I later picked up a Camelback Unbottle (100 oz.) at my lbs for about $35. When I need fluids I just
drop the Unbottle in the backpack.

I prefer to think of myself as thrifty and yet I can still look nifty.

What if I wear my flourescent team Sobe jersey when I ride? Will that get me in the club?

I'd make a tailbox, but my seat is extended all the way. I have heard of the backpack solution, but
I don't trust the zippers to remain shut under load. Plus, it has to be secure to hold my laptop.
And my car broke, and I was desperate. We can't all be fashion slaves.

Comparitively, my Lone Peak seat bag from Calhoun Cycle is a cheap seat bag compared to a lot of the ones out there. It was approx. $43 there...as opposed to the $60 that Hostel Shoppe wants for the same bag.

I've heard nothing but good things about the Calhoun bag, and although I agree that the square
rubbermaid wastebasket is a blight on the recumbosphere, it's not as ugly as you might think, and
there's something to be said for the trunk concept--just take what you have and toss it in the back,
without the hassle of panniers and packing. I suppose a bob trailer would serve the same purpose
rather admirably.

Derek, How many pockets in the Lone Peak? The picture on Calhouns site and description do not tell
me. The Lone Peak site is about 4 years out of date.

I need a good bag for a Giro mesh seat. I do not like the single cavernous bags. A big compartment
is very useful to put larger items in but I also like a separate compartment with easy access to
wallet, keys, asprin, and Cliff bars. That is the stuff I need at the beginning and end of a ride or
at a rest stop. I do not mind if the spare tubes get buried on the bottom.

With some folks using full body socks/fairings/condoms I don't think the Rubbermaid can is going to
damage the image any.

It's not the wastebasket, it's the fact you have a BikeE that causes the blight to some of the
elitists here. I'll take a BikeE with a wastebasket any day over riding something a stupid

The bag is divided with a nylon divider. It is 700 cubic inches so it is not too big. It is a great size for club rides or state tours. It will hold everything I need.

I had a BikeE Radical Bag but I got to where I packed too much. I like the smaller bulk of this bag.

frequent yard sales, thrift shops, discount stores, bike shops. Getting a small insulated shoulder
container, a tourist-beach standing rack,an art bag, baskets, etc., for a buck or two saves me
enough to afford 2 Schwalbe tires, a fairing mount, a Sony Walkman at a yard sale, or who knows
what else.

You might want to read the entire post before responding. The comparitively word is what sets it apart.

Compared to a $125 bag, this is cheap. Compared to a lot of premade bike bags this is cheap.

In actual practice you could get a vendors license and sell the beverages and fudgecicles from your
fudgecycle and maybe, someday, make enough money to buy a real seat bag 🙂

Laurel, I am with you on revolting against outrageous prices on bags and other accessories,
especially bike manufacturer branded products.

Check out the dates! Mine was response #4, Toms #5. That was the entire post, my post is now
organized out of context.

My first recumbent cost less than $100. in 1979, the rebuild of the same 'bent in 1992 was $250., it
lasted into the 2000s I meant cheap in proportion (longevity), not comparison. I think nothing of
throwing $3000. into one of my trikes now (that being cheap in the long term!).
