God Lordy they are indeed. The "resin" v-brakes mounted behind fork are
a "trick" set-up :-)

Reminds me of one of the bike stores here that had a car park
promotion. They went round to the K-mart equivalents and bought a range
of <$150 bikes, then had an open competion to see how far you could
throw them. The winner got a real bike.

It's not all bad... he could just about make his money back by selling
the mudguards to an eBay sucker...

Has the Suntour brand been resurrected? My old Suntour Superbe hubs are amongst the most gorgeous parts I've ever owned - bearing races that feel like silk. Just a pity they use screw-on freewheels. I remember the old Suntour shifters, too, that automagically trimmed the front derailleur when you shifted the rear, so the chain wouldn't rub. They really did make some good kit.

Actually, if I could get hold of one of these locally and check it out,
I might consider running one through winter in Perth and seeing if it
held up. I'm actually stunned you get mudguards and a rack for that
price. However it's probably an utter heap of dangerous [censored] in the flesh.

Someone if rec.bicycles.tech bought something similar from Walmart for
$50 or so and then wrote an ongoing review over around 3000 miles. He
had very few problems with it. Search for posts about the "Fury Roadmaster"
in rec.bicycles.tech 🙂.

I note you can return it within 12 months. Hmm, cost to ship is more
than half the cost of the bike, so who's likely to bother shipping it
back if it's [censored]?

I have a friend who doesn't ride much these days, but he has an old roadbike with some gorgeous Nuovo Recordesque high flange Superbe hubs. Apparently everyone who's at all interested in bike comments on them the moment they see the bike, myself included.

If anyone in Sydney us after a couple of cheap bikes, the bloke
downstairs has a couple he wants to get rid of. Nothing special
appeared to be in working order on a quick 30 second inspection and dont
look to have been ridden very much. Both are around a medium in size.

Don't be too harsh. Suntour (Taiwan) make some quite nice midrange
forks and cranks which go onto bikes OEM. I'm thinking, for example, of
the short-travel lockout-equipped forks on a few mid-high hybrids that
I know. But yes, not a patch on the old Japanese incarnation of the
brand.

Exsqueeze me? Have you SEEN those things after a few hundred kms, if
the l/h lever retention screw hasn't wound its way out, if the jockey
wheels haven't cracked, if the derailleur parallelogram (I wasted too
much energy on these things just by typing 'parallelogram' - doh! I've
done it again!) hasn't fractured, if the . . . ah, forget it. I fixed
lots of them on two Great Rides, which weren't so great for the
mechanics, thanks to Mr. Free Bikes 1 & 11. Cheap Chinese gear bits?
They make great concrete reo.

But,

the brake calipers are ok

the wheels work, for a few thou k

the frames don't break that often, unless provoked

They can't sell them on EBay, which might say something

Mine seems to be still going after 7000km or so. I haven't ridden it
since it was about 5000km old though, so I'm not quite sure as to it's
true kilometerage.

True, I did replace the crappy gear levers, the derailleur (and
unfortunately that cogset with such a short gear), which is all that
you were talking about...

My road bike still has my 20 year old Superbe Pro pedals. They really are
superb, and no, I wouldn't swap them for clip-ins, and they are just too
beautiful to take off the bike. I have stainless steel mesh reinforced
straps on them. Bet you can't buy them anymore.

I've said much in the past about "K-Mart bikes" but it's amazing the amount of people riding the same sort of [censored] over here. They must last for a while..?

On the other hand, I did see a sweet little brakeless, red, un-badged, flip-flop hubbed, fixie, locked to the fence outside 2nx on the way to Tesco. I think it might've been "fixie chicks" machine but I didn't spot any denim or tights or nuffink.
