Negligent homicide. I hope the truck driver does time for that.
Inexcusable.

Yeah, the truck must have had a *huge* delta-V in comparison to the van
to kill two riders. I predict a stiffer than normal sentence, since
judges and juries (rightfully IMO) take a dim view of people killing
cops (even off-duty).
Also, it sounds like it was a four-lane highway, so the truck *could*
have just gone into the other lane and passed if the driver was paying
attention at all.

IN-63 is a four-lane, divided highway in this area:
Speed limit is probably 55 mph, maybe 60 in that area (IN just changed their
speed limits on freeways, but I don't know if that applies to non-grade-
separated expressways as well). If the truck was going 55, and the van was
pacing the riders (call it 15 mph), that alone would explain the huge delta,
but there's no excuse for missing the giant "cyclists ahead" banner. This guy
will be looking at some steep charges, and something tells me the local
district attorney won't be in a plea-bargaining mood.

At first I thought you were posting offtopic. Then I realized you weren't.
;_;
It sounds like it was a box truck - not a semi-trailer, not that that
precludes the driver having one of those.

Here in Western Europe, cycling on a four-lane highway would be
considered as suicide (and is usually forbidden).

Yeah, well. They weren't in Western Europe and they didn't deserve to die.

"regular" cyclists getting killed wouldn't be so important would it? it's
just someone else's loved one, after all.

yeah, usually it is a good idea to pass someone safely before you rear-end
them.

"I get a summons to appear for jury duty.
I did this once before in Philly. Their policy was "One trial or one day" and
they wouldn't bother you after that.
I get my ass up on Friday (my day off) at 6am so I could be sure not to get
there late and have to go through this ordeal again. Turns out it's a capital

appealing prospect, so at break, I hustle to a liquor store and snag one of
those sample whiskies and gargle it for about 30 seconds or so and use the
little bit on the bottom for aftershave. Got my ass out of there in record
