  1. I signed up for a charity ride in May, but I am not getting alot of
riding time in because of the weather. Here in Jersey it has been
rainy, windy, and cold lately. I assume it will only get worse. I use
my stationary bike every night and I ride when weather permits. I was
wondering if participating in a long ride in May is going to be
difficult for me. I am losing weight and my legs are getting stronger,
but riding a long distance in a charity event needs a real training
don't you think? I will be in Atlantic City this weekend and I plan to
rent a bike and ride on the boardwalk. (after hitting the slots). This
will be a test of distance for me as I plan to ride the length as many
times as possible. Now I understand why everyone has been telling me I
need a computer on my bike. How will I know how far I can make it
unless I have something to calculate my distance. What kind should I
buy? I am technically challenged....so it has to be something I can
figure out. Any suggestions. I need to buy it before this weekend. And
will I be able to put it on a rented bike?

A cyclometer merely confirmed the distances I'd already estimated
    using maps and dividers.

If your route isn't too convoluted, you can estimate distance
    from street maps.

All the basic bike computers are fairly simple to use. Installation
is not hard if you're comfortable with a screwdriver and zip ties.
Wireless computers are slightly easier to install than wired ones.

How far is this charity ride? Hills? I was in Atlantic City for the end of the
2004 RAAM and don't recall many bicycles except for the pedicabs. What kind of
training do you expect riding on the boardwalk? With all the foot traffic you
won't get much exercise on the bike. You could go to MacDonald's, get one of
those adult happy meals that come with a pedometer, walk the Walk, and get the
    distance from that.
I did this for six miles but don't remember if I reached both ends. Of course
this will cut into your serious gambling. I think I recall some kind of
information kiosks with maps available. Stick with the exercise bike if that is
the best you can do. A trainer for your road bike is better. A computer is nice
but you can do a reasonable job with a digital watch. Just keep cranking and
    hoping for better weather.

Maggie which ride do you intend to do? Is it the MS 150? If you give
us details we can figure out some kind of schedule for you to ride. I
think you have plenty of time to get in enough miles/saddle time to
complete a long ride (I don't know what a long ride is for you).

Its the MS 25......I did not think I could do more than 25 miles. I
have participated in the MS walk and I would love to do the MS Bike
Tour. It happens to fall on my birthday and if I could accomplish
this bike ride it would mean alot to me. I just started riding....so
I have no idea if 25 miles would be a stretch for me. If I train
properly maybe I can sign up for a longer ride.. This is the bike
tour......I signed up so I would train. I hear they have training
    rides.

The 14th Annual MS "Coast the Coast" Bike Tour is set for Saturday
and Sunday, May 21st and 22nd. You do the pedaling and we'll take care
of the rest. The "Coast the Coast" MS Bike Tour is fully supported
with frequent, well-stocked rest stops, mechanical support, and even
someone to give you a lift if you need a rest. Pick your favorite tour
and sign up today. You can also share the experience by organizing a
team of your friends and co-workers .

    Maggie Writes....
I just arrived home from AC and did not get any riding in on the
Broadwalk.....the serious gambling took priority over riding. I lost
alot of money and had to try to win it back......I eventually broke
even. There was no foot traffic on the boardwalk. I go to AC once a
month and plan to ride on that boardwalk eventually. I walked the
length of the boardwalk last summer and took the pedicab back to the
casino. It was about 110 degrees and I was in no shape to walk both
ways. This summer will be different. BTW...I saw Danny Aiello at the
Tropicana. I was in the first row. He was really good. I didn't know
he could sing so well. I am feeling better and better and have so
much more energy since I started riding my bike. It amazing how fast
it starts to make a difference.

Maggie, my kids each did longer rides with me about the time they turned
seven or eight. They weren't fast, but they were able to complete the ride.
I have no doubt you can do 25 miles, too.

  11. Thanks Claire...I have until May to find out if I can ride 25 miles. If
I train enough and ride longer distances before then, I will sign up
for the longer ride. If I ride a bike 25 miles, I will be very happy
with my achievement. The first ride is on my birthday. I would love to
accomplish it on that day. ;-)

I don't think you'll have any problem with 25 miles. You might want to
consider some biking shorts for the event. I believe I've heard you mention
you don't think you could wear the spandex shorts. They do make baggy style
biking shorts. At 25 miles your tush may get a little sore without them<g>

It didn't take me long to go from riding ~20 mile trips to 40-60 mile trips.
It's just a matter of being comfortable on the bike. Make sure it's
    adjusted to your liking.

Good luck with the ride. I'm thinking about doing a MS ride next summer
with an aquaintance at work. He and his wife ride this every year.

Maggie, on the charity rides you will find rest stops. It's not just one
long ride without a rest somewhere in between the start and finish. And, at
the rest stop, you can have water or GatorAde and some cookies, etc.
