Vaseline is ridiculous to try and wash off anything, shorts, your butt, you hands, etc. I think the Chamois Butt'r(s) are expensive also, but they wash right off in seconds. I only use it on rides over 70 miles.

Although I have never tried it a buddy (older racer guru, ex state champ) swears by generic stick deodorant (not anti-perspirant) which can be had at the dollar store. Also, there is stuff that prevents rashs from soccer shin guards called Body Glide. ($6.99/13 oz at [censored]'s Sporting Goods)

The fact that Vaseline is so thick and water-resistant means you don't need to use much. I've applied just a thin layer directly to the skin, and it seems to hold up fine.

Have tried hand cremes, diaper ointments, udder cremes, cold creme, and sunscreen lotion. All the lotions with mineral oil or petrolatum base seem to work. Currently use "Udderly Smooth" or Chamois Butt'r (the free sample packs from Century events).

Assos Chamois Creme. A bit expensive, but you'll find a little goes a long way. Apply to your "regions" and also on the chamois. It's cool and tingly, and will keep you fresh and lubed for your entire ride. Treat yourself and your loins!

the 8oz tube I just bought was under $10 - your shop is marking the stuff way up there!

Good stuff though.

For short rides (2 hours or less) try noxema. Sounds weird...i know. But it really works well. Anything more then 2 hours and it is absorbed by your skin though. ALOT cheaper then the other creams, and washes right off since it is, in fact, a cleanser. Longer than 2 hours...Assos chamois creme. Oh yeah...if you have serious issues, you may want to consider getting different shorts. I ride with guys who do centuries with no lube at all. $.02
