    I seldom leave the chain in the small ring and head down a
    rock garden because sometimes the chain jumps off the small
    gear into frame. Don't notice it until half a turn of the
    cranks and the potential damage to frame and chain.

    What do you think about this.

    It'd probably stop the chain dropping. However you're
    fighting the symptom, not the cause here - you shouldn't be
    in your small ring descending ANYWAY. Shifting up to the
    middle ring or big ring will put more tension on the chain,
    plus be there for when you want to pedal too. In addition,
    i'd check (or have your bike shop check) the adjustment of
    the front derailleur.

    You're looking for a technical solution to a problem that is
    caused by poor technique.

    Well, I think it would be nice to have with my bash guard on
    my AC1. No buddy's perfect.

    You don't see it. It is hidden by the chain ring. I was more concerned
    about the 1.5mm spacing it takes up.

    Technique or not, chain drop happens and can ruin your ride.

    My chain was doing that... a visit to the lbs for some
    derailleur fine tuning fixed it

    middle or outer ring on descents will pretty much eliminate
    chain drop.

    As for 'ruining your ride', you don't think that's being a
    tad melodramatic?

    Not when you have to break the chain to get the chain unbound. Not allot of
    room down there on a 5-spot. Have had some luck with bouncing on the swing
    arm while pulling the chain out.
