Sheldon you can get your chain to last much longer by taking it off and
putting it back in the OPPOSITE direction. This reverses the direction
of the stretching forces and with enough riding your chain will go back
to it's original length. Be careful not to leave it that way for too
long or the chain will end up too short.

Yeah it's way more expensive than a new chain, but you need to clean a
new chain as well just to get rid of that anti rust / lubricant stuff
they put on new chains.

Let alone using a COTTON swab for cleaning these precious parts!!

Can you imagine what hydrogen and organic acids, present in this BIO
material will induce as massive corrosion and crack formation!!

Prior to ultrasonic cleaning (100 +/- 0.314 kHz) cleaning should me
done with very soft swabs made of PE fibre not thicker than 1 micron!

Still a lot to learn Sheldon.

I really hope he updates his website with this precious information
VERY VERY SOON

As this knowledge will raise cycling fundamentals globally I don't dare
to ask any compensation for it.

Wonder if here, the Netherlands, on the eastern hemisphere possibly
opposite isomers for some of these hi-spec lubricants should be used.

I get my bikes serviced at the LBS every 500 miles, and they always
replace the chain, tyres and brake blocks. My FasterCard[1] takes care
of the costs.

Brake/gear cables, derailleurs and the like only get replaced every 2000
miles. [2]

However my Real Man Saddle [3] shows no sign of wear.

But I've been concerned about lint off the cotton swabs.

Is there any substitute for cotton swabs that might produce less lint?

In NM you can get by with a dehydrator.
Which can pretty much be an old screen door
lain across two garbage cans out in the back
yard, or somewhere in the back 40.

In more pluvial climes, a convection oven
does the trick, 'cuz the fan blows all the
fumes out. And then you can cook your
twice-baked potatoes without worrying about
them tasting like a bicycle chain. And it's
"greener" to use a little convection oven for
little stuff, instead of a big, honkin'
stove/hob oven.

Back in the early '60s my folks got bit by the lapidary
bug, and became Rock Hounds (pity me.) As a consequence,
my dad built a rock tumbler[*] that consisted of a cannister
loosely rolling atop two old washing machine wringers,
one of which was driven by a 1/4-horse electric furnace
motor. I guess a rig like that could make a bicycle chain
look pretty shiny.
