this was the job i just dreaded... get a Park (or similar) chain cleaner (see below) and a 4L (or the biggest you can buy) of water based chain cleaning fluid/degreaser and you can clean your chain sparkling clean in 15min... i usually do one cleaning to get the major gunk off... dump it out ,put in some more degreaser and boom job done... wipe off the residue, put on some chain lube and you are off to the races... no dirty hands, no smelly solvent... these things are amazing.

I just ordered the Finish Line chain cleaner. I hope it will work just as well :-)

Get a proper chain cleaning device, they're about 15 euros and clamp around your chain, you simply back-peddle and the brushes and fluid inside clean the chain - it's the best way by far.

Then, get a rag, fold it so its a snug fit between the cassette rings and clean the cassette.

Be very very careful with any degreaser!!!!! (EG - WD40), they can get into your rear hub and degrease parts that you want to be greased - this cost me loads for the repairs to my rear hub.

Just to clear up any talk here about the use of WD40 - it is not a lubricant. Go to a bike shop, tell them what you ride and where (conditions) and ask for a suitable lube.
