Around here in Norway cell-phone "market penetration" is about 98%. On club rides it seems like it is 99.9%. I hate having a cell phone on a ride. Part of riding is getting away. If I'm on a 5 hour ride, I'm on a 5 hour ride. What do I need to know that can't wait til I'm finished? I only ever bring one when I am riding alone on my MTB and my wife insists. She is concerened that I will crash and succumb to hypothermia lying in the woods someplace.
What's it like in other parts of the world? Does "everyone" on club rides bring a phone? Do people answer calls while riding in a group?

As all my riding is done solo, to get away from it all, I do bring my cell phone with me. If I get run off the road and am hurt, but able to use the phone, in my opinion it may just save my life.

On our club rides, I think the majority are probably carrying cell phones. They are a nice in case of emergencies. I've only seen few people answer or make calls and they usually go to the back of the group for this, perhaps stopping. They either catch up, or don't catch up -- I can't recall ever waiting. I usually have mine off and might check the message light at a rest stop.

I take my phone with me when I'm riding, but up in the hills there's hardly any signal anyway. Plus, I generally can't hear it ring if I'm riding at any speed. So it's not really a problem.

I frequently carry my phone while riding solo, turned on with a hands- free earpiece. It lets me ride for an hour mid-day when I would otherwise be in the office covering the phone. If it rings, I stop and get a notepad out of my handlebar bag, take notes, and get the work done when I get back to the office.

i admit i carry one too. not much use while cycling and if you try remember to keep it in your left hand! (sudden front brakes only can be a prob). i was fishing last week with a friend and we discovered they are great for keeping in the waders. he was about 1/4 mile down river "anything?" ..."naw, you?"..."naw, no bites yet, some good riffles here tho!"

I was hoping to earn that distinction, but then my parents started having serious health problems. I got a "pay as you go" phone, and in the first four months I carried it, talked less than one hour on it, even allowing for the way the company rounds minutes up. I am extremely stingy about giving my number out, and if I hear the phone ring while riding, I check the Caller ID and/or voice mail at the next convenient stop. It's more of a glorified pager, IOW. Waiting for a stop has also spared me the expense and annoyance of unwittingly answering the one "junk" call I have received to date. I wouldn't talk while riding any more than I would while driving.

I carry my phone all the time, but I generally don't take or make calls when I'm with any kind of a group unless it's terribly important. I wouldn't have it turned on during a ride any more than during dinner with friends. To do so would be rude to the people I'm with.
Sometimes having the phone is the only way I can be out riding at all. It seems silly to wait at home just for one important call. Otherwise I carry it in case of an emergency -- if not mine then maybe someone else's. I have it so I might as well carry it.
My cell phone is my primary phone. I wouldn't even have a land line if I didn't need it to get DSL.
I like Dave's approach. One should have the cell phone on, because the built-in GPS will tell emergency services where you are. You could have an injury that prevents you from turning on the phone. But turning off the ringer can ensure non-technological privacy.

Same as others here, I ride alone alot and so I need a phone in case of emergencies. I have an old nokia that I swap my sim card to and that I'm not too worried about smashing if I crash.
