  1. I know almost nothing about cassettes!!!!

Yesterday I went hill riding and struggled. I usually only ride on the flat, and I weigh a bit more than my Japanese training buddies so going up the hills is always a little extra effort for me....

After our ride yesterday I had a look at the other guys cassettes and most of them had a 25 on the back where as I only have a 23....

Would it be worth my while getting a 25?

I do lose my races on the hilly sections as well.....

It seems pretty obvious that a 25 is going to help me a lot, but what am I going to lose at the other end of the scale?

Can anybody point me to a good web page on the subject?
Admittedly I haven't tried google yet... (will do so now)...

If any of you feel like commenting on the subject.....

    😎

  2. assuming you have shimano nine speed, a 12-23 cluster gives you 12-13-14-15-16-17-19-21-23 while a 12-25 gives you a 12-13-14-15-17-19-21-23-25 so the biggest diff is the missing 16t cog. if you can live with out a 12t cog you can get a 13-25 which gives you 13-14-15-16-17-19-21-23-25

  3. I think I'll go and get a 25 before my next hilly race!!!

    Thanks for the quick response....

    What's with the 27????

My wife has a TREK 1500 Women's WSD with a 25 on the back and a triple on the front.... I think she can get up Mt Fuji no problems..... (she only weighs 45kg too.....)

    Thanks again....

This site seems to list it all as well.

The standard Shimano 12-27 9-speed (e.g. Ultegra) is:

    12-13-14-15-17-19-21-24-27

The three largest cogs; and then the next two are on common carriers. The smaller 4 cogs are individually mounted. (on the 12T top gear configs.)

  5. Is there any point in changing to a cassette with a 13 top?

I have not used my 53/12 ever in the past 500 miles.

I just switched from a 12-23 (ultegra 9 speed) to a 12-27. The only loss is the 16t and the gain is the option of two easier levels for hills and passes...I'de recommend it.
