Over the past few years I have been through several chains and cassettes on my stable of bicycles. Mostly the components are inexpensive SRAM branded units (PG 850/950 and similar). It seems that whenever I put a new chain on, I have to get a new cassette as well.
For example, I installed a new chain and cassette on a bike early this summer. It was a PG950 chain and a PG950 cassette (12x23). I put about 2000 miles of mostly fast group rides on the drivetrain over the course of the summer. Despite performing just fine, yesterday I replaced the chain because it measured 12 and 1/16 inches over 12 links or 0.5%. On the stand everything worked great. Today I go out to do hills and get some nasty slippage on heavy loads during climbs in most of the middle sprockets.
The same thing happened the last few chain changes and a new cassette fixed it each time.
So what gives? I thought that cassettes should last longer if the chains are replaced on time. I do not want to get in the business of buying a new cassette after each 2k or a miles or a new chain every month. I understand that I may wear out components more than the average rider due to my clydesdale status, but this seems excessive.
The funny thing is I have never really have a chain or casette performance issue until I change one or the other. I used to be less dilligent in drivetrain maintenance and rode another bike for years without issue. When I finally wanted to used a different casette, I found the chain severely stretched and incompatible. I swapped both the chain and cassette and left the chainrings alone - I have never had an issue with chainrings.
Perhaps I will shun common knowledge and throw the old chain back on and ride it until it breaks.
