Cassette question

you can go to 9 speed but you will have to replace the rear derraileur, right shift lever, chain and possibly chainrings

9 speed has different spacing and cog widths

that adds up to a fair amount of money and on an R1000 i don't know if it would be worth it

In terms of what's necessary, Duckwah has pretty much summed it up. It's a considerable expense (largely dependent on how good a deal you can find, and what groupset level you want.) What cassette has it got on it right now? Does the gear spread it offers suit you, or do you really feel the need for a wider gear range, or a more closely matched set of gears while keeping the same range?

An 8-speed chain and Sora cassette would be pretty cheap in comparison, and get you into riding with a minimum of fuss.

If you're new to the sport, you may as well get your money's worth out of the older 8 speed bits you've got now, and do a bit of a groupset upgrade alongside the 9 speed conversion as a little present to yourself for sticking with it 🙂

Then again if you have the cash to spare, there's nothing wrong with new shiny bits 🙂

What frame is it? It'll usually have some designation written on it (CAAD-something)

It´ll cost a fortune , repair the bike and start saving for another in the future , those levers alone cost a fortune . Find out if you want to make that sort of financial comittment , also as big S seems to be planning to go 10 speed you may find yourself spending a fortune for old gear ( or get some real bargains ) so wait and see .

Ya don't need to replace the RD unless your 8 speed stuff was dura Ace. Ya need the ear shifter,chain and cassette.

That's alot of hooey.The rear shifter is not inexpensive,but I've seen new ultegras going for $59,and with a chain and cassette,it's far from a fortune.

I'm running 12/23 right now. At 200 lbs I'm no speed racer. As my buddy puts it, I have a Ferrari bike with a Corolla motor. Having said that I and reading your posts I'll just replace the cassette with another 8-speed. The next question is, what gearing should I get? I'm thinking of a 12/25 and I've seen a 13/26. I'm willing to sacrifice top end if I can get something to make hills a little more efficient.

Can either of those cassettes replace the existing 12/23 without any further modofications?

May as well go for the 13x26.Make sure the chain is long enough to handle the big/big even tho you are not suppose to use it.

Sure,if its shimano compatible.
