Curious, I recently noticed that if I hold the rear of my bike off the ground and spin the wheel forwards while looking straight down at the cassette, it wobbles side to side.
I've been told it's "normal", even by Shimano but even their tech support couldn't tell me WHY it's designed this way. This is actually the part the cassette sits on that wobbles (verified by removing cassette and looking at that black piece move around while spinning wheel).
Amazing!! I came on here to post the same thing as you! I have the same problem, but i noticed mine because of a clicking (sometimes grinding) sound coming from the cassette area when the wheel is spinning. I noticed the gears seem to move as if the axle or something it is on was bent. My wheel only has maybe 500 miles on it. But yes, it does do this. I have an Alex hub and Shimano cassette. Does anyone know about this wheel (from a Felt S-32) ???
I'll have some kind of answer in the morning. I'm taking the whole bike, not just the wheel, back to the shop and put it on a trainer just like i did and spin the wheel. Once the wheel is on the bike, the clicking and grinding resonates through the frame and provides a nice drum beat for the cassette to do that hula-dance to. That will be my other thing to show them. I'll let you know what they say.
the owner of the shop took the whole bike in. On the service order he put "Find the Problem and Fix it" -free! I don't mind letting them have it for a couple days, it always comes back tuned up and like new. I did notice on some new bikes that Hula dance was present. I didn't bother to ask the guys at that particular shop. they would either try to make me feel stupid for not "just knowing" or would get all technical and hold a seminar about it.

No seminar (YET) , but they are replacing my freehub. When I get the new parts on the wheel, I'll give it a spin and see if it does the shake rattle and roll. Then I'll ask about it. Maybe they'll give me some more free stuff to get me out of the store.
Well, the part I find interesting is how many NEW ones do it. So don't be surprised if the new ones does it. Or for that matter, doesn't - since I saw about 50% do it, others don't. Go figure...

I had the same issue. I am a mountain biker however. After a few months on my Sun Rhyno Lite with Deore Hubs, I got the same ticking per crank and wobbling. It is because the spokes on the wheel get loose at the hub, not exactly sure but, I am pretty sure it has to do with the build of the wheel. If you true the wheel enough times it will also happen I believe.
