I've just finished the Hotter than Hell century in Wichita Falls and am looking forward to some upcoming rides that are mainly in the 10%+ climbing range and am thinking of buying a new cassette and chain for 3 specific rides that deal with hills. I'm currently running a 12-25 Shimano Dura Ace on my 53/39 and that's fine for the area I'm in (Texas Hill country in San Antonio, Tx). Any advantage in switching to a 12-27 (despite the recent non availability of the 12-27's) or maybe something more like some of the custom ones from Harris Cyclery like their 13-30?

There's very little downside to switching from a 12-25 to a 12-27. The only difference is the last two cogs:
12-13-14-15-17-19-21-23-25
vs.
12-13-14-15-17-19-21-24-27
But since the 53/12 is more gear than most of us need, a 13-30 or 13-28 would make even more sense (except that it costs more). A 27T is 8% easier to pedal than a 25T.
Thanks Art...so a 13-30 with a new chain would be noticeably different on Hill climbing than the 12-25 ? (taking into consideration the length and grade of the Hills/climbs) Just as a comparison what type of gearing would the Tour riders use when climbing the L' Alp- Duez?

I have a 12-27 cassette and really appreciated it whenever I do the Leakey or Ft Davis rides. Not that you absolutely need to have it but why grind it out with a cadence of 50 or 60 when you can be doing 80 or 90.
It really came in handy on the observatory hill climb at Ft Davis. I think the grade is 17% or higher the last Kilometer or so.

If you want a 28 and don't want to lose the 12, IRD just came out with a 12-28. Distributor is Merry sales. Tom

The 27 is about 8% lower than the 25.

You'll need a different r-der for a 30t largest cog.
A 12-13-14-15-17-19-21-24-28 will also avoid the need for a new r-der, and is even a bit lower than the 27. I think this is a custom, however. There is also the 12-13-14-15-16-18-21-24-28 custom, one which I've used.
