  1. A question:

Anybody ever heard or seen evidence that diabetics are more susceptible to carpal tunnel syndrome?
A friend (who is diabetic AND non-computer-literate) asked me...I didn't have any answers. Thanks
    in advance.

  2. Computer use isn't the only cause of carpel tunnel, it's caused by any repetitive action of the
wrist. However, my tunnel got very bad a few months ago and my doctor told me it is aggravated by
both pregnancy and diabetes. HTH karen

  3. Stewart....carpal tunnel is a form of arthritis (there are only about 100+ forms) ; some forms
are autoimmune related, so that might make diabetics more apt to get the problem. Men have a
greater ocurrance than women (women do get it tho) and of course the over use of the area is a
    big reason too. Mic

    Always, be, and stay AWARE!

  4. Stewart, I've had carpal tunnel syndrome. My endo, gp, and hand surgeon told me that while diabetes
doesn't necessarily "cause" cts, a whole lot of diabetics "get" cts. It seems to be due to
inflammation. It is not necessarily because of repetitive movements. (My 80 year old grandfather had
cts surgery a couple of years ago. He was a rancher several years ago, and did not perform the
respective movements normally associated with cts.) So, I don't know that there is a direct link
between the two conditions, but an awful lot of diabetics tend to get cts.

I messed around with the braces, but ended up getting the surgeries. It fixed the problem in me.

Yes, we are. Don't remember offhand where I've seen this, but I've seen it in several sources.

Would carpal tunnel be helped by glucosamine? Would trigger finger? Jon

    Short answer: Yup.

Long answer: The surgeon who operated on both of my hands for carpal tunnel (and 2 trigger fingers
on the one hand) said that the excess glucose in the blood attaches to the ligaments and tendons,
decreasing the amount of room, thus causing (or increasing) the syndrome. (my simplistic layman's
    understanding of what he said).

Granted I'm an accountant and type on the computer all day at work, then come home & use another one
all evening, it is *NOT* specifically repetitive motion caused as is commonly believed. The surgeon
himself is looking at needing to get one of his hands done soon.

  8. I don't know if glucosamine would help. It probably wouldn't hurt to try it. I don't believe that it
would help with trigger fingers. I've had several, and have had to have surgery on each on them. The
cortizone shots they give for trigger fingers have only lasted for a couple of months on me. The
cortizone will also raise your sugars. Steph

  9. Thanks, ALL for your responses!

My buddy says, with the ammunition you have given her, she will enjoin her health profs to look a
little deeper into her condition. Hopefully this will ease her pain. THANKS AGAIN!

  10. yes that is a fact. Diabetics are more prone to get carpal tunnel.
