Not a good idea for the hbars or the seat post. Breaking things that you bod' rests on, like bars,
    stems, cranks, really hurts.

Besides, how much will you save? Not good $ spent, IMO-

The main reason for doing this is that the Bontrager looks cool, and Image Is Everything!

Oh, yes, it will lighten your wallet by a few grams!

You'll save little weight and lose much long-term durability. Carbon bars and posts are great for
serious competitive racing, and are adequately durable for lightweight riders and low-stress riding
if replacement when they're scarred (which inevitably occurs) is not an excessive burden. You are
presumably not racing, and while your riding may be low-stress, you're at a weight level where I'd
be hesitant to use one. (I'm just under 200 myself, and *I* would not use a carbon bar or post.) You
would be better off keeping the money in the bank, in my opinion.

I replaced a Selcof aluminium post with a Campag carbon one.

Got the benefit of a slightly less jarring ride because the post is a bit flexier, though heavier
than my previous aluminium one. For me, that was worth the money.

To compensate for the added weight of the carbon seat post, I intend to reduce my own weight from 74
    to 70 kg ;-)

This is the heart of the matter. At 220 LB, the 3-4oz you'll save is such a miniscule percentage of
your total body/bike weight that it's a total waste of effort and money. It might make sense for
your 95 LB wife/girlfriend to have a light bike to climb mountains with, but someone your size
should forget the whole idea. It simply won't matter. Just use what's comfortable and sturdy enough,
    and ride lots.

It's that innate urge to decorate oneself to impress others in the group. Why do people buy all
sorts of things that exceed the functional requirement in some way or another? Do I really need a
BMW M5? Of course not, but that doesn't prevent me from lusting after one. A lot of that
foolishness fuels the economy. If everyone across the world became entirely pragmatic today,
you'd see an economic crash like never before. Not that I advocate reckless consumerism...it's
    just a fact of life.

Hey if people actually have to money to spend on what the want, that's great. But when some in
society are so influenced by marketing that they have to have it...even though it leads them to
bankruptcy. That is a different story. I don't think anyone is going bankrupt from $180 water bottle
cages, but I'm sure there are more than a few college students that have spent the loan/grant money
on them and failed classes because the couldn't afford the books.

I have three kids at home ages 8 to 15 and it is amazing how marketing works on them. The sad part
is many adults are just as mindless(often even more so) as these youngsters and buy a lot of total
useless junk because of it. Heck if there weren't so many mindless people there wouldn't be all this
useless spam in my mailbox everyday.

I guess facts and reality are two different things. Consumerism and the idea that it's needed for "a
healthy economy" is killing off the species. It's also based on the selfish reality that the
majority of humans on the earth are the slaves for a minority.

Only the ones who drive as though they own the road and are immune to (and have nothing but contempt

    World population growth . . .

Facts and reality are indeed two different things.
