    Hi all

On day 11 of my Atkins diet - have lost 10lbs so far!

The other night I cooked a boxed meal (from Morrisons) of 2 chicken breasts
stuffed with mushrooms in a caramelised red wine sauce. It was very nice!

I'm a bit puzzled though, my Atkins food list deducts fibre from total carbs
to give net carbs - of which I should eat 20 of in the first stage, yes?

Well... this boxed meal had, per 100g:

carbs 1.6g (of which sugar 1.3g)
    fibre 2.5g

making the net carbs -0.9g (a minus amount of carbs???)

    How does that work then?

I'm guessing you are not in the USA. Some other countries PRE-subtract the
fiber, in which case the 1.6 is what's left after that subtraction.

If you are in induction, however, you should not be eating items with sugar (even
OUT of induction it's not a good idea, but ESPECIALLY during induction).
Anything with "carmelized" in it's description should set off warning bells.

  2. Sometimes they have already deducted the fiber, they always do in Canada and
    England.

    labels.

That's right - I'm in the UK... I'll have to rethink that carb counting
then! I do avoid sugar as much as possible but now and then... and as I
say; 10lbs in 11 days! That's with quite a lot of Greek yoghurt and
    blackcurrant squash too...

America and England - two countries divide by a common language!

    Thanks

What do you mean? You guys speak English, while we speak American. 😉

I was wondering about that when you mentioned "Morrisons" becoz our low carb
sisters and brothers on this board are mainly Americans and I'd never heard them
    mentioned "Morrisons".

The quality of beef steaks has gone downhill since Morrisons took over Safeway...

While we're talking - be careful with pork chops from Tesco Finest range, they
are loaded with preservatives and sugar...

They may be cheaper, but at the end of the day you get what you pay for.

It's annoying for me because I'd rather go to Safeway than Sainsbury because of
    the transport arrangements.

  10. Hi fellow countryperson

I can't believe they don't have Quorn over the pond!? No danger with the
pork chops - my big problem with Atkins is that I don't like eggs or red
    meat!!!

    All the best

  11. does this mean that the fibre is always deducted in the UK? or do you have
to guess whether it has been or not.

    Linda

    Check the label.

If the label looks like this:

    TOTAL CALORIES: CCC
    TOTAL FAT: FFF
    TOTAL CARB: [censored]
    FIBER: QQQ

Then you have a US style label and the fiber is a subset of total carbs,
so you can subtract it. Also for very small labels (single serving
snacks) sometimes the catagories are indicated by a difference in font
type and/or regular/bold. If the fiber catagory font type is different
in some way from the total carb line, either not in bold or different
font, then it is an indication of being a subset and you can subtract
    it.

If your label looks like this:

    TOTAL CALORIES: CCC
    TOTAL FAT: FFF
    TOTAL CARB: [censored]
    FIBER: QQQ

On single serving snack packages that are too small for the standard
panel (in any country), if your FIBER line is in bold or the same type
of font as the other catagories then it's already subtracted. If it is
a different from the other catagory fonts, it's probably not subtracted.

Since food products made in the US will appear on shelves,
not always. Eurtopean products are not quite consistant
at presubtracting fiber on labels. Only most of the time.

No need to guess. Use the hidden carb formula. It will
tell you whether carbs are missing no matter if they were
falsely deducted "effective" carbs or if they were
    pre-deducted fiber.

Fat is 9 calories per gram. Protein 4. Carbs 4. Multiply
them out, add the three, and compare your total with the
total calories on the label. If your total matches, no
fiber was deducted. If your total does not match, it had to
come from something not listed or roundoff error.

the 4-9-4 formula is an approximation.

    See http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp/Bulletins/faq.html#4-9-4

    answering this question
I multiplied protein, fat and carbohydrate values by 4-9-4, but my energy
value is different from USDA's. Why?

    also

    look up Atwater conversion factors

    http://www.dietsoftware.com/atwater.shtml

Not saying that there aren't mistakes on labels. Just that sometimes
differences are due to the conversion factors.

They do have Quorn in the US. You do have to buy it in the
"health-food" supermarkets (Whole Foods, Wild Oats, etc.), but they
    have it there.

It's just that most people here think Quorn is gross. And there were
already a lot of soybean-based "meat substitutes" on the market here
(unsurprisingly, because the US grows a lot of soybeans) that were
cheaper and much better established, so Quorn has a tough row to hoe
    to break in...

I recently found out a product LIED to me by using that.

While I was on vacation with my family in Michigan, we went shopping
for food, and I saw a cereal that claimed to be low carb and no sugar
alcohols (MiniCarb apple-cinnamon granola). The nutrition info said
it had 25 grams fiber per serving (29 grams total carb per serving).
I had a quarter cup or so every morning mixed in with my low-carb
    yogurt.

When I got home, I entered the info into FitDay, and it told me there
was a mismatch between the info provided and the calorie count. It
couldn't possibly be 285 calories per serving and have 25 grams fiber
per serving. I lowered the fiber count to 15 grams per serving, and
    everything balanced properly.

I'm using up what's left in my morning yogurt (1/8 cup only), but I'm
sure not going to buy another box.
