Forester and Baja... but it seems the Impreza (or Outback Sport)
wagon would satisfy you, your bike and your parents.

Can't find one Greg, I've tried. The 2.5 RS/TS is IMPOSSIBLE to find used
without, as one of the dealers said, "all four wheels going in different
directions". Apparently people buy the 2.5 impreza wagon, and just drive it
into the ground. I've looked in both the Boston and Hartford markets, and
have yet to find a used one with under 80k miles for a reasonable price.
the ONE that looked good turned out to have been in a major accident with a
bent frame that was "straightened" - no thank you.

Otherwise, ys, the impreza wagon would be my first choice.

Honda Element is popular the the Roadies, Tri-geeks and Mtbrs here. My
friend with a dual crown DH bike can roll his bike in.

I'm not a big fan of SUV's that don't have SUV capability. I rarely use it,
but my jeep has pulled its fair share of stumps/fallen trees in its day, and
done a little bit of offroading now and then. I basically used it like a
pickup truck, but I really need an enclosed, lockable bed and relatively
comfortable seating for 4, or I'd just get a pickup truck.

I think due to the gas prices these days, I'm going to try to stick with the
hatchback/wagon style - I like handling too much, anyway.

I would buy a pickup but my bike would be gone in 30 seconds from a
non-locked bed. I don't even like leaving it on a locked roof rack. Boston
has way too much bike theft...

I live in the LA Basin and cable lock my bikes to the bed in the back
of my pickup, though I don't leave them unattended for very long
anywhere. I wouldn't leave a bike unattended in a locked vehicle for
very long either because if they really want the bike, they're going to
get it no matter where it is in any vehicle.

Now how'd I miss this thread. Hard to go wrong with a Sube Outback Wagon.

AWD, decent ground clearance, mpg, acceleration, room for a bike or 2 in the
back if you fold down the seats, & reliable.

My friend loves his Toyota Matrix. Gets great mileage, roomy inside and you
can snap up a 2004 model for around 12k. If you fold the backseat, you can
lay your bike flat in the back and change tires+ without taking out the
bike.

Conversion van. Nobody would ever think that you had a stash of bikes
inside. Paint it ugly, paint it with a "Joe's Septic Service" on the side,
and you could cart around Bin Laden and nobody would know!
