I was about to go to the physio to grapple with my back injury. The explanation was going to be: "... it's fine until I drive the car. Then I get a really nasty pain in the back, which won't go away until I apply heat treatment and lie down."
Then, it occurred to me: perhaps this really is psychosomatic. The act of driving the car is so abhorrent to me that I summon up back pain.

Anyone else suffer from this condition?
Well I wouldn't completely rule out psychosomatic, but I know that my back is much better on motorbike than in the car. Once when I had hurt my back the only way I get to the doctor was on the motorbike.

getting in and out of cars, when I had a lower back problem, was quite painful. Bend and twist at the same time, I think was the problem.
And, a lot of car seats don't exactly encourage good posture.

Now that I don't drive a great deal, I notice how stressful it is, and how trapped one feels behind the wheel in the city. After a while this causes my teeth to grind together, my head to throb etc - I guess these are psychosomatic side-effects :-)

Not at all - you should try cruising in a 1966 Chevy Belair - plenty of leg room and seats like a lounge suite. Lovely.
But it guzzles petrol like nothing I know, so it's relegated to toy status most of the time.
i have [censored] shoulders (left from baseball, right from hit from car...). every now and then i forget and reach over to back seat to scramble for melways or whatever. have dislocated my shoulder 3 times now doing this. You'd think i'd learn... 🙄
luckily i don't put things on the back seat of the bike 😄 Then again, i wonder if it's an issue with a tandem...
