Sunday's race was worse. On the last lap, chasing to make contact with
the severely diminished pack, I literally threw up on myself.

I will say this: once you barf, there's little doubt about your effort
level.

I assume vomiting is a trailing indicator of extreme effort, but you're
the doctor: is there an adrenaline effect? Should I be trying to throw
up in order to maximize performance?

I'm not saying I had a great race over the post-vomit 5km that were
left, but I was just straggling home at that point anyways, and I knew
it. By the time I emptied out, just finishing was the goal. Heck, where
I was on the course, crossing the finish line was the shortest route
back to my car.

I should mention that my teammates managed 1-2-4, so my early and
pathetic work at the front was not a complete waste. The pack just got
drained off a few riders at a time on a course with lots of short, steep
hills. Official placings put me at 32nd of 73 starters.

I think he's a CPA.

I believe there is a kind of beta-endorphin release after vomiting but
I doubt it would have enough of an affect to WANT to vomit.
