For the pain and inability to sleep?

Ask the doctor to provide a "morphine pump" ... it's a device
that dispenses painkillers under the patient's control, which
usually means they are more comfortable and sleeping better.

If they hurt, they just hit the button and get a tiny dose of the
pain medication immediately.

And for pain, sometimes morphine beats the newer stuff.
Unfortunately, heroin is illegal in the USA, although it's one
heck of a painkiller.

You obviously do not know much about pain medications, but believe the
anti-pharm propaganda of the alties. Pain control with lucidity is done
routinely. Pain control to allow sleep is even easier. See Tsu's comment
about the morphine pump. This device allows the patient to control the
medication in small doses to reach that optimum balance of comfort and
lucidity. Don't knock it, it works.

I know enough about pain meds to see mam was a zombie due to them before she
died.
I also know enough to be told that the pain meds would not effect her
lucidity, only to be shown that they did.
'Don't knock it, it works.' It didn't work - she was still in pain and
zombified. I have to live with that for the rest of my life.

May I inform you, if you didn't already know, that the opium poppy (Papaver
somniferum) is an herbal medication that has been a part of folk medicine
since prehistory times. Preparations of this herb are more natural than any
of the three "alternatives" that you suggest; and they are certainly more
effective. Most people who object to their use have a moralistic
fundamentalist fear that somewhere, someone might be feeling high.

The morphine pumps widely used are sometimes the answer to reasonable
control of what may unfortunately be intractable pain. It's been estimated
that 5% of patients with chronic or terminal illnesses sadly do not get any
adequate relief of pain no matter what is done for them.

I've worked with terminally ill patients who were unable to get any relief
from the most severe pain I can imagine. In one case, a woman literally
begged me to end her life to put an end to her suffering & I was deeply
upset that current health care ethics & the law prevented me from doing so.

If we aren't able to alleviate intense, constant pain in terminal cases &
the patient wants to end their suffering, they should be assisted in doing
so.

I'm sorry your mother (& you) had to go through such pain. Every health
care provider I personally know (both alt. & conventional) tries their best
to relieve suffering & maintain a good quality of life for their patients.
Sometimes all efforts fail.

I posted the original question about alternative methods to help with
pain. My step-father has cancer and is on pain medication (morphine).
He is not sleeping and the medication makes him feel extremely
nauseous. I heard that treatments like acupuncture and therapeutic
touch can help. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks.
