I am sort of with you on the humor of this but since I was glued to the
television from blast off until landing I know it happened. Of course
now anyone under 45 does not remember that day and may be convinced it
didn't happen, but they really did not have the special effects to pull
it off. Just watching one of those beasts come out of the vehicle
assembly building at 360 feet plus was an unforgettable sight.
What is pathetic is that this 'president' has a 'vision' or putting a
man on the moon by 2020. We could have done it every 5 years if we had
kept the Saturn V in production and improvement.
One juiced Saturn V using LOH and not kerosene and with 4 space shuttle
solid boosters could have put as much int orbit as probably 10 or even
20 Shuttle missions.
Research has since determined that a super heavy launch vehicle would
have been much more productive than tying to look glamorous with a fly
it back plane. It wastes way too much to orbit a whole shuttle and then
bring it back every time.
