Looks nice, but I'm not convinced by the kink in the rear
triangle downtubes (if that's what we call 'em!) Won't
that be a likely failure point, or is there some clever
engineering reason for it?

The "clever engineering reason" was that the rear dropouts were sawn off
an old junked frame but I didn't want to keep the angle. It is a likely
failure point, but given that the tube used is 1.2mm - 1.6mm thick and
the triangulation will prevent much flex I am reasonably confident that
this will last.
It only needs to last long enough for me to break out the brazing torch
and finish the genuine version 2.

A fiver to your favourite charity if they last more then 50 miles or survive
your 1st decent pothole (whichever comes first). I'm honesty surprised you
can even sit on it without them bending and buckling.

It's a recumbent, and most of the weight is on the frontwheel.
BTW, what did you use to join the tubes, a mig welder?

Accepted. And I'll match it myself. I'll even give you the benefit of
the doubt and discount the mileage it's already done (I don't have a
speedo mounted yet!).

It's called over-engineering. I had similar comments about Igor when I
built it, but despite mileage into three figures it is doing just fine
with no frame problems. Igor is the tandem I built by splicing together
two 'supermarket special' grade gas pipe specials.
Jon's last version (Hooves 1.0) had an untriangualted rear fork - a
much weaker design - which lasted further than twice the distance you
have mentioned. (and that is being not very generous.. it was probably
much further than that).

Igor was brazed badly - ie there was a lot of filling using braze metal

Nah. That's something that improves with age. From my experience the
stages of learning to arc weld go:1) Learning to not just stick the rod to the metal!
2) Learning to not just burn holes in the metal!
3) Learning how to fill in the holes you've just burnt!
4) Sticking things together!Start again at step 1 everytime you change the thickness of either the
metal to be joined or the filler rod.

Got to love a MIG. In fact I've just been using it today to patch a
mates sill on his Fiesta, which was kind of interesting. I managed to
braze up my first recumbent with Mapp/Air, even the headtube and
bottom bracket [which took two torches at once, jsut made it] and it's
held up brilliantly [no butt joints though - - no way! - all lapped],
but getting this cheapo MIG has been really, really useful. Got to
watch that brittleness though, watch what you're welding - so I am
told by respected sources. Oxy/what-the-hell is the way to go on this
front, but.....not possible right now.

close enough to examine the welds, but hey ho. Most people don't!Got them thanks. I'm in two minds about adding a few. It would allow
large ring - large sprocket combinations (I can't do 53 - 34 at the
minute), but I quite like keeping the chain as short as possible. The
range is probably wide enough. It really depends on how much it annoys
